WRESTLING PROGRESS

ANNUAL MEETING SHOWS GOOD POSITION IMPROVEMENT ON PREVIOUS YEARS “In the past it has been found difficult to get a quorum, but this meeting tonight goes to show how things are going in the wrestling line,” said Mr. G. Henning, president of the New Zealand Wrestling Association, at the annual meeting held last evening. There was a large attendance of members. “This year has been a great surprise to most people. New Zealand and Auckland in particular have been fortunate in securing such wrestling talent,” cofitinued Mr. Henning. “We were more or less new to the wrestling game and we have had difficulties this year, but I hope that we won’t have it in the future. I am sure that with the experience we have gained things should go more successfully in future.” The balance sheet showed receipts of £5,217 11s Sd. On the debit side prize 1 money headed the list with £2,804 11s! 6d. Other items were:—Expenses, | £534 5s sd; rent. £438 11s sd; advertising, £340 17s 6d; amusement tax, i £SOB 10s lid; fixtures, £ll9 12s Sd; honorariums, £2l; loan, £3O. The j balance carried forward amounted to £420 2s 3d. Liabilities were niF and total assets i amounted to £679 13s lOd. The balance sheet was adopted. Objection to the method used in receiving nominations for the positions of officers was made by Mr. £3. X. j Mahraj, who said that not until that afternoon had he discovered that nom- ; inations were required seven days be-foi-o the meeting. He knew that several other members were in the same J position. In past years it bad been | usual to nominate at the meeting, but I for some unknown reason the method : had been changed this year. This was [ not fair to those who did not know, although they were present at the annual meeting they were precluded j from naming their nominees. A letter from a vice-president. Mr. J. M. F. Connelly, who was unable to i be present, was read. Included in it was a statement made by Tom Alley, who said that next year he thought wrestlers would require transportation expenses. Alley expressed the opinion that if the overseas men were expected to pay their own fares it would be necessary for the various associations to work on a 10 per cent, basis instead of 20 per cent. He was prepared to look out for suitable men. and pay for five round-trip tickets if the association would work on a 10 per cent, basis. If the association were willing to pay fares the 20 per cent, basis would be satisfactory. Mr. C. E. Browne: Alley’s main ob- ! ject is to come here as manager and ! match promoter. The main trouble this season has been the result of re- | ports set about by Alley. Mr. C. B. McCarthy: The wrestlers j are on a better basis in New Zealand I than they are in Australia, us here they receive 80 per cent., compared j with 50 per cent, in Australia. Mr. T. I*. Pountney; It will be a sorry day for sport when contestants can dictate terms. Mr. Henning said that there had been I a passage of arms, and Alley had/

threatened to go ahead on his own. Mr. Henning said he told him to carry on. The letter was received without further discussion. It was decided that the end of the financial year be put forward until the end of February, and that the annual meeting be held on the second Monday in March. It was also decided to limit the membership to 100, and to hold council meetings once a month during the wrestling season. The secretary’s honorarium was increased to £75, the treasurer’s to £25, and the auditor’s to £lO 10s. Officers were elected as follow: President. Mr. G. Henning; vice-pre-sidents, Messrs. C. E.
