HAS LOT OF SPEED Two races were exacted from Abbess at Taumarunui and she i-aced consistently for a win and a third. She was ridden by R. McTavish, who got her away smartly in the Taringamotu Handicap, and allowed her to assume the lead three furlongs from home. The daughter of Quin Abbey appeared to have the issue well in hand at the home turn, and her horseman showed unwonted confidence, nearly being caught by a surprisingly determined run by Rose Lupin in the last furlong. However, there were no regrets and Abbess returned her supporters a little over evens. She was produccd ™ th e Ownango Handicap at the end of the day, but failed to stayafter being several lengths ahead of the others in the middle stages of the race. Six furlongs—or seven furlongs—will suit Abbess, and she indicated that she will win further honours on the turf.
