CLEANING UP STARTS

COLLECTING MATERIALS ON DEVIATION WORK NEARLY FINISHED Work on the Westfield railway deviation is almost finished, and only the final clearing up has to be done before the line is handed over to the Railway Department. The second set of rails will not be .required until the new railway station is ready, consequently there is no haste required in finishing the sector. One mile of permanent way has yet to be laid, but this can be done very quickly. The six suburban stations are finished except for the overhead footbridges. A start has been made with these. Huge quantities of material are being collected, ready to send to other Public Works jobs in other parts of the Dominion. The number of workers has been considerably reduced, and some have been transferred to other centres. A number of the small locomotives which were used in hauling materials over the temporary lines are being sent to the South Island Main Trunk line. Thirteen of these locomotives were in use on the Westfield deviation at one time; now the number has been reduced to three, and these will not be required much longer. It is expected that by next June pr July passenger trains will be using the Westfield deviation. By that time the station will have been finished, and the whole of the inward and outward railway traffic reorganised to use the new section of line along the waterfront to join the main south line at Westfield.
