STATE WILL MAN MINES
THREAT TO WITHDRAW DOLE COAL DEADLOCK IN N.S.W. Reed. 11 a.m. SYDNEY, Today. The Northern miners, with the exception of a few small lodges, have rejected the terms which were approved by the miners’ delegates. The Rotlibury miners, however, are demanding a secret ballot. The Minister of Mines, Mr. Weaver, has received applications from enough skilled miners to man the Rotlibury pit and another mine of similar size. If there is no prospect of the miners resuming work, the Government will man the mines, and if the miners refuse the work that is offered them the Government will withdraw the dole. There is no other development in the coal position, but it is expected that the whole of the miners’ lodges will have held their meetings for consideration of the terms of settlement by tomorrow. The Federal Government is greatly concerned at the miners’ hostility to any form of compromise, and it is believed that an effort will be made early in the week to bring the parties together. A mass meeting of miners in the Newcastle area on Saturday almost unanimously rejected the terms of settlement.
