PAPER SET ON FIRE

MAN SENT TO GAOL

Special to THE SUN TAURANGA, Wednesday

Charges of drunkenness and committing mischief by setting fire to a box of paper near business premises were preferred against three young men, Archie Taylor, James Duffy and Jack Cunningham, in the Police Court before Mr. S. L. Paterson, S.M., today. Taylor and Duffy were also charged with using indecent language. Constable Skinner said the three accused were drunk. They were seen to go into a right-of-way in Devonport Road. A fire broke out and the men ran away. Later the men were arrested. The magistrate said that as far as Cunningham was concerned it seemed to have been a drunken freak, and he was unfortunate in his companions. On the charge of drunkenness he was convicted and discharged, and on the other count he was ordered to come up for sentence if called on within six months. He was ordered to pay costs, £2 ss, and to take out a prohibition order. Taylor, who had been previously in trouble, was convicted and discharged for drunkenness, and on the other charge was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment. On the third count he was sentenced to seven days’ imprisonment, concurrent with the other sentence. For being drunk Duffy was convicted and discharged, and on the charge of committing mischief he was fined £5, with costs, £l. On the third charge he was fined £2.
