REQUEST DECLINED
DONATION TO CITY MISSION From Our Own Correspondent W HAN G ARE I, Tuesday. A request from the Rev. Jasper Calder for a donation to provide funds for giving a holiday to children of poor families was declined by the Whangarei Borough Council last evening. After Mr. Calder’s letter had been read, Cr. Pickmere said lie thought a town the size of Auckland should be able to look after its own children, and that the request should be declined. Cr. Brainsby said this could not be looked upon from a parochial viewpoint. They contributed to Dr. Barnado’s homes, and also to many other things not so deserving. Cr. Brake said it was quite possible that people from Whangarei received assistance from the Auckland City Mission. Whangarei had no slums, and they should open their hearts a little. He seconded Cr. Brainsby’s motion that £5 be granted from next year’s unauthorised expenditure. The Mayor, Mr. W. Jones, though appreciating the previous speaker’s remarks, said he considered that charity began at home.
It was decided to inform the City Missioner that the council cannot see its way clear to make any donation.
