Farewell to Headmistress

SCHOOL REUNION OLD GRAMMAR PUPILS The Auckland Girls' Grammar School in Howe Street was the scene of a farewell function last evening in honour of Miss Morrison. retiring headmistress of the Epsom Girls' Grammar School, and miss F. McDonald, who is retiring from the staff of the latter school. A large number of old Grammar School girls were present, many of them having been pupils at a time when there was but the one grammar school in Symonds Street, this being used for both boys and girls, with the late Air. J. W. Tibbs as headmaster. The guests were received by Aliss Iv. Edgerley and Airs. Morpeth, vicepresidents of the Old Girls* Association, who arranged the evening. In a brief speech, Aliss Edgerley expressed pleasure at the large gathering, on whose behalf she was to say pleasant things. Always foremost were the memories of those who had helped to build up the fine traditions of the school, and now the names of Miss Morrison and Miss AlcDonald were added to the list. They were leaving after many years of devoted service, in which by their high qualities, they had won the esteem and affection of all with whom they came in contact. Both old girls of the school, they had put aside opportunities of advancement and given their lives in the service of the school. Aliss McDonald, as president of the Old Girls’ Association, then asked Miss Morrison to accept two pictures and three books of engravings on behalf of those present. A bronze readinglamp was presented to Aliss AlcDonald by Aliss Edgerley, who spoke feelingly of the unceasing service she had given to the Old Girls’ Association in her capacity as president. After a reply by Aliss Alorrison and Aliss AlcDonald, thanking those present for the gifts, the hall resounded to the cheery singing of “For They Are Jolly Good Fellows,” and a social evening of games and competitions was begun. . An enjoyable programme of musical and elocutionary items had been arranged. Those contributing were all old Grammar School girls. Aliss AI. | Haresnapo gave a pianoforte solo, also ; acting as accompanist for the songs ; given by Miss Myrtle Burris, Aliss * Helen Taylor, Aliss Lola Solomon and Miss T. Salmon. Aliss Doris Merser and Miss Bessie Merser gave humorous recitations. Supper was served in an adjoining building, which had been charminglyarranged with golden lilies and blue delphiniums, tne school colours. Streamers in the same shade gave a touch of festivity to the scene. Aliss Alorrison wore an ankle-length frock of black Chantilly lace, with a crimson rose on the shoulder. Aliss AlcDonald was in crepe de chine in a deep rose beige f shade. Aliss Edgerley was wearing a frock of floral ring velvet with long side draperies. Airs. Morpeth had on a black georgette frock. Afiss E. AI. Johnston wore a black georgette frock with panels of fine gold embroidery and coatee of black ring velvet. Members of the committee were: Airs. Alexander, Aliss Nora Gallaher, M iss E. SUCCESSFUL CONCERT ALBANY WOMEN’S INSTITUTE On Saturday, November 30, an excellent programme was presented in the Coronation Hall by the Albany Women’s Institute, assisted by members of the Greenhithe AY.I. and others. Miss Edna Peace, of Auckland, received enthusiastic recalls for her two numbers, “The Reason” and “Hine e Hine,” and gave in response “Salaam” and “Annie Laurie.” Mr. and Mrs. Okell (violin and piano) gave finished renderings of “Legende" OVieniawski) and “Serenade” (Franz Drdla). Miss Freda Crosher’s monologues at the piano were features of the entertainment and she was twice recalled on each occasion. Mrs. Tate, of Greenhithe, gave an elocutionary number which was encored. A very amusing comedy sketch, “At the Bathroom Door,” was given by members of the Greenhithe Women's Institute, and a cornedv sketch (without words), given by the Albany Comedy Players, evoked much laughter. Other items were: A gavotte danced by Gladys Collins, a child of 9 years, in Old English costume: an Irish jig danced by Elsie Schofield, Rae Charman and Vera Hunter( in costume): and a ragtime dance by Misses Freda Crosher and Enid Bruton. In the absence of the president, Mrs. Bruton, through sickness, Mrs Phillips, vice-president of the institute, ably presided. The accompanists were Mr H Hooton and Mrs. Okell.

At the residence of Mrs. McAnelly, Sunshine Town, Taumarunui. a pleasant gathering took place with the object of bidding farewell to Airs. Tyack prior to her departure from the locality. Games and musical items filled out the programme, anc Mrs. Bragge. on behalf of. those present, presented Airs. Tyack with a crystal sugar basin and cream Jug. The recipient made a graceful response. To receive her guests Airs. McAnelly wore a frock of rose taffeta.

A pleasantly diversified programme was submitted to the numerous patrons at the annual dance arranged by the Raurimu Girls’ Kahanga Club, and added still further to the popularity of this bright band of young people. Ia addition to a well-balanced dance schedule, humorous sketches and other items were staged by members of the club, and the talent displayed fully merited the applause so generously given. The Merry Five Orchestra supplied the dance music, extras being given by Airs. W. McNamara M:. McNamara held the post of M.C.
