Backers’ Problems in Railway Hdcp.

BEST SPRINTERS ENGAGED A LIKELY HALF-DOZEN There is one way of playing cricket that is not widely followed. That i is the method so popular with the j small boys, “tip-and-run.” One is j reminded of that when making an attempt to solve the very intricate I problem confronting backers in the • A.R.C. Railway Handicap at Ellerslie ; on Boxing Day. That sprint race itself is much of the “tip-and-run” variety, for the horse first out of the barrier, if any good at all, might be said to have the race half won. Paganelli has but one pound more than he was narrowly beaten with in the C.J.C. Stewards Handicap last month, but there is an easier task in front of him, namely, the Palmerston North Stakes, run the day after the Railway Handicap. Cimabue is still good, and Gascony would stand a good chance if he was sound. He, too. may take on the Manawatu event. Silver Paper is indeed a class sprinter. He was unlucky the third day at Riccarton, and if he is brought North he must be given a great chance. He will bo bracketed with Aspiring, and it is possible that both will run. The latter is a smart filly, if a bit erratic. Likes It Both Ways Silvermine is more than useful, if he is not actually a weight-carrier. He can handle both dry and wet going. Toxeuma Showed good form at Trentham and Riccarton, and must be labelled dangerous. White Fang does not appeal so much at Ellerslie as he did on the almost straight Riccarton course. ITe won the Stewards’ Handicap handsomely, but indifferent riding had a good deal to do with his subsequent defeats at the C.J.C. meeting. Nancy Lee, last year’s winner, has done nothing in the interim, but is nicely in. Havering goes fast, and of course there is the brilliant Eaglet, of whose speed Aucklanders are well aware. Lady Quex won brilliantly at Takapuna, and is apparently a muchimproved mare. Lady’s Boy has been racing of late over middle distances, and that will not help him, genuine as lie is. Ceremony is a brilliant sort, if a bit delicate, and he is just the sort to win if he gets to the post in good order. Vallar should be all the better for his race at Takapuna, and his failure there can be confidently overlooked, for he wanted that run. In Corinax and Vallar, Trainer J. AVilliamson stands more than an outside chance of pulling off the Cup and Railway double. Great Star is speedy, and of the remainder those that appeal are Arrow Lad, High Finance, First Money, A war ere, Auda, Coon Song, Flair, Freehold, Elunting Bov, Leitrim, Leader, Llanore Polyxena and Valuation.

The half-dozen that finds one friendly disposed toward comprises: SILVER PAPER TOXE UMA EAGLET LADY QUEX CEREMONY VALLAR Of this sextet Silver Paper impresses considerably, with the three-year-olds Ceremony and Eaglet as most likely to threaten danger.
