THE WILL TO WORK
MIGRANT'S BEST CAPITAL IS HIMSELF
S.A. OFFICER’S OPINION
Young countries should be wise
in their selection of migrants.” says Commissioner William Maxwell, of the Salvation Army, who is passing through Auckland on his way to take command of the Eastern Australian area. “A man does not necessarily need capital. His best capital is himself. He needs health, the will to work, and the chance to make good in his new' environment.” Commissioner Alaxw’ell speaks with authority on the subject of immigration for he has taken part in extensive Salvation Army immigration work in Canada. “As far as I can tell it is a great success there.” he remarked. “One cannot speak for the whole of Canada but the immigration work of the Army has been followed by admirable results.” The commissioner, who is accompanied by his wife and his daughter. Ensign Ethel Maxwell, arrived yesterday on the Niagara. He is taking the Australian post vacated recently by Commissioner Sow ton. His own Canadian command is being taken over by Commissioner Hay, of New Zealand. “It is my first visit to Australia,” he told The Sun, “and in making it I am fulfilling a life-long ambition. Ever since I w'as a boy I used to dream of going to Australia.” Prior to visiting Canada, the commissioner was managing director in England for the Salvation Army Life Assurance with 1,250,000 policy holders and a turnover of £1.000.000 a year.
