VARSITY SCORES FOUR POINTER AGAINST SHORE

TEN MINUTES TO SPARE With id.-al weather and ground conditions at Devonport on Saturday, Varsity succeeded in securing an outright win by seven wickets, w ith ten minutes to spare. The students led by 50 runs on the first innipgs and then dismissed Shore again for 126. The Shore bowlers tried hard to save a complete loss, but without success. Varsity had established a useful lead of 22. with two wickets in hand, on the previous Saturday, and might well have declared at once to get all time available for a possible fourpointer. But Lunn (18) and Mathieson (24) resumed their match-winning* partnership on an easy, plumb wicket, with the outfield in excellent order. Mathieson went at once in lashing at Coates, but the last wicket plodded along unnecessarily to add another 27 before the first change in the attack saw Saunders finish Lunn’s valuable top score of 36. SHORE OPENS BRIGHTLY With a deficit of an even 50 runs Shore started its second spasm in a gallant attempt to force the pace, and with the forlorn hope of getting a lot of runs quickly enough to put Varsity out again for a four-pointer. After Saunders failed to survive the first over from Smeeton, the colt Goldsworthy and Captain Frater laid the wood on hard and often, wiping off the debit balance of 50 in half as many minutes. It was the one purple patch in a very dull match, and was heartily applauded by the meagre gathering of spectators. Goldsworthy was cheered for a joyous smack, which lifted an express half volley from Mathieson well over the path, but in lashing at an off ball the colt edged it to the professor deep in the gully. Hugh Webb fell to a hot catch by Metge at deep point, and Frater was bowled by Smeeton for a hard-hit 36. and from then on only a brief halt by Player and Kelly interrupted another mournful procession, which dragged out until just after five o'clock. a brilliant catch by Schnauer breaking the Kelly-Player partnership. Mathieson and Smeeton bowled unchanged, the former finishing with the good average of five for 48, while Smeeton bowled very steadily in securing the other five. The students had exactly 73 minutes in which to get 77 runs for the full win, but by bowling well off the wicket the Shore bowlers made a tactical attempt to save a hard-earned point from the wreck, and the position was a bit of a deadlock with Shore aiming to keep down runs instead of knocking down wickets, while the Varsity men were taking no chances of forcing matters until Schnauer and Mathieson got together. Mathieson shocked the umpires by taking guard on the off stump! Ronald Bush had been responsible for a steady 26. and it seemed as though a first innings win would result, but Schnauer and Mathieson managed to get to the bowling and landed the four-pointer with but ten minutes to spare.
