ELLERSLIE’S GOOD POSITION

ROBERTSHAW IN GREAT FORM Two and a-half hours at the wickets sufficed for Ellerslie to establish a substantial lead over Ponsonby, who, at the conclusion of the day, had seven wickets down, and was still 82 runs short of its opponents’ total of 206. The surprising feature of Ellerslie’s innings was the failure of some of its best batsmen, including R. Burton, and the fact that three-quarters of the total was knocked up by the first three men. Starting off in great style the Yateslletherington opening partnership went for the bowling. Barnes, Cooper and Nicklin proving very expensive. The fast stuff suited the batsmen, Yates in particular, revelling in the leg deliveries, which he hooked and glanced in bright fashion. His partner gave an aggressive exhibition, his cutting being a nice feature of his display. Encouraged no doubt by the 64 put on by the first wicket pair, Holliss went to it with a will. Driving and cutting on the leg side with marked vigour, he set a sparkling pace, and even after he lost Y’ates at 60, his scoring rate was unabated until he topped the scoring with 71. Both he and Yates were dismissed in the same way, being smartly caught behind the stumps by Edmonds, who gave a good display with the gloves. Then Robertshaw came on at the northern end. The splendid length and shooting effect of his deliveries completely nonplussed the Ellerslie batsmen, seven of whom were returned to the pavilion in quick succession for 2S runs. The rout was complete. Going in on a wearing wicket. Ponsonby batsmen did not fare too well. Edmoncls and Morman opened promisingly, going out after runs. Morman gave a pretty display of off-driving and leg glancing strokes, but did not stay long after be lost bis partner, whom he helped to put on 42. Barnes and Masters were aggressive, particularly the latter, and carried on the score to 92 for the fourth wicket. The next three wickets went cheaply.
