FRESH-AIR SCHOOLS

AVONDALE SOUTH TYPE DISCUSSED BOARD REACHES DECISION All the discussion on the erection of an experimental open-air school at Avondale South has led to a decision, reached by the Auckland Education Board this morning, to let Its architect, Mr. A. B. Miller, proceed with the erection of a type evolved from his own investigation. As far as possible the architect will comply with the requests of the school committee. In letters to the board this morning, Dr. E. B. Gunson, for the Open Air Schools’ League, advocated erection of the Fendalton (Canterbury) type, to face north-east, and Mr. Egerton Gill, for the school committee, the Linwood Avenue, Christchurch, type, stated to face north-west. “By the time the school is put up, it will be wonderfully and fearfully made, observed the chairman, Mr. A. Burns. “The Fendalton type is purely open-air ahd the other inclines toward the type we have been erecting.” Mr. F. A. Snell: They don’t know what they want. “Who is bulldjng the school, the board or the Open Air Schools’ League?” asked Mr. S. B. Sims. “We should be guided by our architect, not an irresponsible body.” Mr. T. U. Wells moved that the erection be left to the architect, with consideration of the school committee’s requests. He was supported by Mr. R. Hoe.

The school committee suggested a verandah on the school, nine or ten feet wide, at least, and facing northwest, an opening of four inches under the eaves on all sides, and a wall without window's, facing the open side, to ensure better visibility of blackboards.

Mr. Miller commented that the two schools of thought on the question conflicted, and he declared he would not be prepared to accept responsibility if either type, as advocated by the proposers, were erected. At a previous meeting, Mr. Miller reported on his investigation of types In use in several New Zealand education districts. Mr. Burns said the work would have to be begun quickly for the use of the school in the New' Year.
