GALE AT TE KUITI

VERANDAHS LIFTED TREES BLOWN DOWN From Our Own Correspondent TB KUITI, Friday. Between 9 anti 10 p.m. yesterday Te Kuitl experienced a most alarming visitation in the form of a wind of hurricane force, accompanied by a downpour of rain of tropical intensity. Although the sky was overcast earlier in the evening, the heavy rain began to fall with unexpected suddenness, and quickly filled the watertables in the main street. A few minutes later fierce gusts of wind intensified the unpleasant conditions, and as a result considerable damage was done to trees, shrubs and verandahs. Two large trees in the main street were blown down and several shop verandahs wdre lifted off their supports.

In the Mangarino Road the effects of the gale were most noticeable, numerous shrubs being blown over and a large fowl-run completely demolished. The rain ceased as suddenly as it had started, and the wind died down shortly afterward. The havoc caused by the storm was apparently confined to a belt a few hundred yards wide, stretching right across the town. The electric light was cut off in a portion of the town, owing to a falling willow tree damaging the transmission wires.
