Pink Coat Wins But Pulls Up Very Lame

EAGLET FAILS TO STAY WELLINGTON’S FINAL (Special to THE SL'X) WELLINGTON, Monday. A feature of the racing - at Trentham j today was the reception given to | Hector Gray, who. relicensed on Sat- | urday night, resumed riding after an absence of four years. Gray was cheered on walking across the birdcage to take his first mount. Rasouli, in the Spring Trial Stakes, and cheered again when legged up. "When he rode Black Duke a winner in the principal handicap of the day there was a renewed outburst of enthusiasm. In fact, he received an ovation to be proud of. Gray showed that he has lost none of his ability, and he is remarkably tit. The course was fast and the weather line. The attendance was exceptionally large and the £131,827 put through the machine during the two last year’s spring turnover. Rona Hurdles The Rona Hurdles was won nicely by Brigadier Bill from Novar and the favourite, Tresham. Tresham, Brigadier Bill and Modern were in front at the half mile from Xovar and Kapuna. Modern was clear going to the second last fence, but Brigadier Bill led at the final fence from Modern, Tresham and Xovar. Brigadier Bill came on to win by two lengths from Xovar, to beat Tresham by half a length, with Modern a head away. This was Brigadier Bill's best for j some tiny?. He went very freely when allowed to run along in front. Spring Trial j The Jamieson stable was again to | the lore in the decision of the Spring i Trial Stakes, in which it was repre- ! sented by Vali. The start of the race | was lar from even, and among the i sufferers was the hot favourite, False i Scent. Footpad, Vali and Rasouli led | at the half mile from Imateagirl, j Arrowhead, Streamer, Roundelay, j Monalol and Emotion. Rasouli, Footj pad and Roundelay turned for home | lirst, ahead of Arrowhead, Vali, Ima- | teagiri and Emotion. Roundelay was j holding his own until just on the post, i when Vali came through on the rails \ to win by half a length from Roundelay, with Imateagirl naif a length back third. Habit, Air Laddie, Arrowhead, Emotion and Monalof were right up in line. Rasouli will bo good when he has had more racing. Roundelay acquitted himself well and Vali, well-ridden by H. Goldfinch, only just won. Tararua Handicap i The promising Count Palatine had { a close call in the Tararua Handicap, i but he showed quality. Royal Opera j and Lucky Light led down the back from Tigrano. Austerity, Make Up. | My Own and Mount Shannon, with | Count Palatine near the rear of the : field. Royal Opera and Lucky Light j ! led at the half-mile from Make Up. I Tigrano, Mount Shannon, Llyn Dhu, j My Own "and Austerity, with Count j Palatine moving up. Royal Opera and Lucky Light led into the straight from Make Up, Llyn* Dhu. Mount Shannon and Tigrano. Lucky Light : held the leaders well down the ! straight. Then Austerity flashed up on the rails, and Count Palatine put i in good work on the outside. Count j Palatine got up to beat Austerity by 1 ! a head, with Lucky Light a length i away third and Royal Opera, Make | Up. Tigrano and Llyn Dhu were next j right up. Lucky Light again ran a good race out in front all the way. King’s Jest disappointed, and Llyn Dhu was not good enough. Tigrano ran moderately and Make Up should be useful at the smalls, except that he is bad at the barrier. Roseneath Handicap Gesture won his third consecutive race when he contested the Roseneath Handicap. At the home turn Gesture, Simba. Green Uinnett and Chief Uink were in line, but Gesture came away and won by two lengths from Chief Uink, with Green Lin nett three lengths back. Princess Betty was fourth and Sporting Chance and Simba , next. Simba was sqfiarely beaten. Pearce Handicap The Pearce Handicap was a great race. Reremoana was favourite. Panther led out from Paddon. Xight Lad, Goshawk. Reremoana and Black Duke. Reremoana ran up to Panther nearing the straight, and Black Duke and Paitonu were handy. In a great finish Black Duke got home by half a length from Paitonu, with Panther only another half length away, and Reremoana a creditable fourth. Merry Mint and Atholspear were next. Black Duke was really finely handled. Panther and Paitonu should soon again be in the money. Reremoana had every chance. Harcourt Cup Pink Coat soon established a big lead in the Harcourt Cup, and was lengths clear going along the back. Turning for home he was two lengths ahead of Eaglet, Commendation and Hunting Cry, and he held his own to win by a length and a-half from .Seatown, who came up from the back and beat Concentrate for second place. Eaglet was a close fourth, and Commendation and Hunting Cry were next. Pink Coat was lame after the race. Eaglet could not stay, nor could Hunting Cry. Concentrate went really well. Nainai Handicap Cimabue led all the wav in the Xainai Handicap. Aspiring, Francolin and Consent were nearest Jiim in the run to the straight, but he shook them all off and won by two lengths from First Money, who finished fast in second place, while Arrow Lad was a third and Gold Cure. White Fang and Silvermine were next. Ruahine Handicap In the Ruahine Handicap Coon Sorr r led to the course proper from RovJj i *?i > ? de W L , 1I ? 0 , sln ’ Wci 'ata and RiihI r.eld. riicnfield then drew awav and !
