Prodice All Out to Win Yesterday

PONJOLA WINS HUNT CUP ; GOOD SPORT AT CAMBRIDGE ! Undoubtedly one of the most enjoyj able of the many holiday meetings in j progress yesterday was that conducted ( by the "Waikato Hunt Club, when it ; staged its annual race meeting on the picturesque Cambridge course. The weather was fine up to the second , race, when steady rain set in and lasted for half an hour. There was , j another shower just before the last ! j race, but that did not damp the enj thusiasm of the large sporting frater- ' i nity. The course was in excellent order. ! j with the sting taken out of it, and l there was some stirring racing, many j finishes being very close indeed. Pro- ; dice won the principal flat eA’ent, the « Members’ Handicap, but it was not quite the good thing for her that the betting market indicated, for it was only superior horsemanship that enabled her to place the issue beyond doubt. Importer beat Ponjola narrowly in the Waikato Hunt Cup, which pro- j vided a spectacular contest, with a I sensational ending, Importer being disqualified for the race through not taking the fence live furlongs from ! home, this giving Ponjola the big stake and trophy, Waitaunalia and j Pompeius placed second and third respectively. The sprint was won by that good horse. Pegaway. who was at a doublefigure price. He Avon most convincingly, and so something good may be expected from him when he sets to racing over middle distances in midsummer. Everything went off nicely at the meeting, a tribute to secretary Mr. Walter Stopford. Certainly the proI gramme got well behind, the division j race, the second on the card, losing half an hour, but that is always likely |to occur where divisions are con- ! cerned j Speculation was brisk, the totalisator handling £31,9785, compared with £31.533 last year, an increase of £3405. Considering that the investments on the Hunt Cup were held up and not released until two races later, this was rather a remarkable result, and in itself a tribute to the popularity of the meeting. Maiden Steeplechase The opening event, the Maiden Hunters’ Steeplechase, was quite an • interesting race, with Rodger outjumping and outstaying his opponents. i Haeremai. £630, was a good favouri ite, with the outsiders, Rodger, £IBO, and Taha, £322, returning the divi- ■ dends. The favourite jumped badly, : but was going well at the finish. Townsman, Maungakawa, and Nabob : went fast for the first mile, Maunga- ’ kawa leading past the stands from - Townsman, Nabob, and Rodger. The : last-named took charge along the back. J and turned for home clear of Nabob, Taha, snd Haeremai. Rodger went on to win by three lengths from Taha, • with Haeremai a. length and a-half [ away, just in front of Foxhound, who ; finished fast. Nabob and Maungakawa j were next. Bardowie Handicap j The Bardowie Handicap was run . in two divisions. There were numeri ous withdrawals, only eight starting -in the first heat, and sixteen in the ‘ second. —Tasty, £025, the Te Hoia — ' Tahu bracket, £589, the Volimond—- » Welcome Boy bracket, £sll, and Valroe, £492, were the only horses seriously supported on the totalisator. j In the first di\ T ision, Valroe (on the rails) hopped out quickly from Pari fait Amour, Tasty, and Belle Star, Val Simon moving up into fourth place.at j the half-mile. A’alroe and Par fait ! Amour turned for home together, ; ahead of Tasty, Val Simon, Belle Star. i and Nassau Lady. Once in line, Val- ! roe went away, to win by three lengths from Parfait Amour, Tasty being two lengths farther back. Nassau Lady - was fourth, and Joy Girl, Belle Star, •» and Val Simon followed. The winner • broke down after passing the post. In the second division, Patere caught ■ the jump-out, showing the way early 1 to Oscar, Coll. Volimond, Dainty Arch f and Tuku. Volimond was in charge at the end of a furlong, and passing i the half-mile was making play from : Patere, Tuku, Oscar. Te Hoia, and • Abbey Queen. Tuku and Te Hoia were behind Volimond at the home turn, but the latter easily held her own, to win by a good three lengths ; from Te Hoia, with Marechal (who ‘ came from a long way back) another , length and a-half away third. Coll l was fourth, and then came Oscar, ; Patere, Tuku. Abbey Queen. Ruby Dawn (who bolted for a mile prior \ to the race), and Dainty Arch.

Hunters’ Hurdles Democratic, £1,022, was a pronounced favourite in the Hunters’ Hurdles, Spalpiko, £626, Master Holey, £427. Omeo, £340, and Calithe, £334, all these being at fine prices. Spalpiko tried to win all the way, AY’**h Democratic in the middle of the field and meeting with some interference. Omeo ; moved up along the back, and was up | with Spalpiko at the home turn, near- ! est them being Master Roley, Calithe, | Democratic, and Luminary. Omeo | quickly put the issue beyond all doubt, | and won by four lengths from Calithe. ; who was nearly three lengths ahead of Spalpiko. Master Roley was fourth, and Luminary, Soami, Democratic, and Mashoor next o\*er the line. Members’ Handicap Backers fell over themselves to be on Prodice in the Members’ Memorial, the New Zealand Cup candidate carrying £1.602. High Pitch, £822, and Lady’s Boy, £625, carried fair sup tport. The favourite was on her toes at the start, but Tinker got her away well. Liaison and Prince Lu led out of the straight clear of Black Maire, Prodice. Lady’s Boy. Gold Rain, Flying Juliet, High Pitch, and Wenday. Entering the back, six furlongs from home, Prince Lu was out two lengths from Liaison, who was four lengths ahead of a bunch comprising Black Maire, Prodice, and Lady’s Boy, with High Pitch. Flying Juliet, and Gold Ruin following. Passing the halfmile the leaders had almost come back to their field, and it was here that Black Maire made a sharp forward move, and Prodice also began a run, only to be steadied. Black Maire showed the way into the straight, closely followed by Liaison, Ladv’s Boy. Prodice (on the rails), High Pitch, Prince Lu. and Wenday, the last pair being well beaten. Prod ice came through on the rails, but Lady’s Boy went stride for stride with the favourite, However, under punishment. Prodice asserted herself, and she won handsomely by two lengths from Lady s Boy. who hung on tenaciously. Black Maire stuck on too, and was only a neck away third, two lengths in front of the fourth horse, High Pitch, with Wenday four lengths farther back fifth. Next were Liaison. Prince Lu. and Flying Juliet, with Gold Rain last. The winner was ridden right out but she appeared to be very fresh, and the race should sharpen her up. Waikato Hunt Cup A fine field of 15 lined up for the hig jumping race, backers favouring Pompeius. £853. Birkbeck. £540. Ponjola. £5lO. and Waitaunalia, £509. The contest was a fine spectacle for a mile and a-half. Boomerday was well clear passing the stands' the second

! time, following being Ponjola, Imporj ter, ‘Waitaunalia, Birkbeck, Marita, and i Sunart. Birkbeck fell along the back, j where Ponjola took-charge, and turned | for home just in front of Importer and Waitaunalia, with Pompeius and Su#art well back. In a tight finish Importer beat Ponjola by half a neck, with Waitaunalia two and a-half lengths back third. Pompeius was fourth, and Sunart fifth, with a big gap back to Sea Comet, Boomerday. and King Fame. An inquiry Avas held to decide whether Importer jumped the fence five furlongs from home, where he actually f ran off. and upon this being consid- ! ered proven Importer was disqualified. Ponjola being placed first. Waitaunalia second, and Pompeius third. Bruntwood Handicap Unoco, £1,276, and Hakanoa. £B5l, were heavily backed in the hack mile, the former being at a very short price. When they had settled down, Tuku was in front from Hakanoa, Monday, Always, and Unoco. Tuku and Hakanot turned for homo together ahead of Unoco, who came through on the rails. In a very close finish Unoco beat Tuku by a head, with Hakanoa a length back third. Always fourth, i and Miss Comet fifth. Ladies* Bracelet j The amateur riders staged quite a i good finish in the Ladies’ Bracelet, for : which Democratic, £OOB. was favourite, with Luminary, £179. and Master Roley, £153, finishing first and second, and paying- substantial prices. Luminary led all the way, being clear at the turn for home from Master Roley. Democratic, and Foxhound, and they finished in this order. Luminary lasting long enough to get the decision j over Master Roley by a head, with Democratic two lengths away third, and- Foxhound fourth. Bollard Memorial Handicap The sprint provided a wonderful betting race, with The Begum £791 a good favourite at better than threes, with Awarere £790 next and Kingfield £759 and Value £726 also heavily backed. Pegaway, the top-weight, was supported to the etxent of £335. and gladdened the hearts of his supporters by giving them a double-figure dividend. Kingfield led out from Awarere, The Begum and Takutama. but along tiie back Takutama and Kingfield were on terms, and they turned for home together, clear of Value, Pegaway, Awarere and The Begum. At the distance Pegaway had gathered up the leaders, and he had no difficulty in going on to win by nearly two lengths from Kingfield and Takutama, who I were separated by half a length. The Begum finished well into fourth place, and \ alue headed the remainder. Additional results are: HUNTERS’ HURDLES Of £300; about ]*J miles 4—OMEO (A.
