ADVERTISERS CONFER

CONVENTION OPENS THIS EVENING VARIETY OF SUBJECTS To promote greater Interest in, and wider knowledge of modern advertising methods, the first advertising convention to he held in Auckland w ill be opened in the Chamber of Commerce Hall this evening. The convention, which has been modelled on an international one recently held in Berlin, will be attended by local business men and visitors from Southern centres. It will extend over four days, assembling again on Thursday and on Monday and Thursday of next week. The opening speaker this evening will he Mi - . G. C. Codlin, president of the club, who will deal with the modern development of advertising. He will be followed by Mr. Arnold F. Goodwin, who will give an address on commercial art, illustrated by specimens of his own work. On Thursday Professor R. M. Algie will speak on' “Traps and Snares, or Legal Aspects of Advertising,” and Mr. F. W. Petterd on “Typography and Display.” For next Monday the subject of “Outdoor Publicity” is in the hands of Mr. W. Pascoe and that of “Research and Marketing Investigation" in the hands of Dr. E. P. Neale. On Thursday, the final day, Mr. R. J. Strong will discuss “What is Circulation?” and Mr. L. Alfred Eady will seal with “The Ethics of Advertising.” At the convention luncheon next Wednesday the speaker will he Mr. H. H. Sterling, general manager of railways, who will take as his subject “Advertising by the Largest Trading Concern in New Zealand.”

During the term of the convention a display of advertising posters, some of which have been specially obtained from England, will be on exhibition. Commercial artists and students should be interested and have been invited to attend.
