Great Parrish Again

DERBY COLT’S BRILLIANCE Keen Trotting Heats at Epsom AUCKLAND CLUB'S SPRING MEET THE popularity of the reduction in admission charges instituted bv the Auckland Trotting Club was iu\l> demonstrated by the increased revenue at the turnstiles. There was. however, a slight decrease in the totalisatoi turnover the £.35.500 handled for the day falling short by 1 of the £35,847 recorded on the opening day last October.

The Auckland spring carnival opened in fine weather on a track that, despite heavy rain during the week, provided good footing. The racing was of a high standard, many of the contests providing spectacular sport which was made more enjoyable by the total absence of anything that would create an air of dissatisfaction. Messrs. R. T. Reid and A. E. Commons. stipendiary stewards, were as usual on deck keeping * strict guard over the proceedings. Three drivers were lined £1 for minor offences. The only incident to occasion much concern was at the finish of the Mountain Trot, when. Gold Sovereign, under pressure, bored out, carrying Raima with him. After a lengthy inquiry, the judicial committee decided to alter the placings, and Raima was awarded second prize. The explanation of driver T. Roe that ha made every effort to straighten Gold Sovereign up was accepted. The officials, with president Rowe and secretary Mabee at the head of affairs, carried out their duties efficiently, and no stone was left unturned to bring the function to a successful issue. AVrackler. owned by Mr. If. F. NicoU. president of the New Zealand Trotting Conference, who was present to see his young champion race, won the big event, the Spring Handicap, in great style after going away slowly. Another outstanding performance was the fine victory achieved by Great Parrish, the Derby colt, in the X J arnell Handicap. Appended is a review of the racing: The Favourite Scores All nine acceptors lined up for the Waiteniata Handicap, for which Tamahine wound up a very hot proposition, being entrusted with £741 against Eva Reta, the second favourite's £458, Paradigm £177 being at a remarkably good price. Tamahine broke twice in the first furlong, but was behind Audo Spray and Lady Ena entering the back stretch. With the first circuit completed Tamahine was just in front of Paradigm, Eva Reta, Lady Ena, Direct Action, Linnet the Great and Peterson. not a great deal separating this bunch. Down the back again the favourite was clear of Paradigm, but crossing the top the field bunched a bit. The favourite turned for home a length in front of Paradigm, with Linnet the Great, Peterson and Direct Action handy. Tamahine held off Paradigm over the last bit and beat him Uy a neck. Linnet the Great was two lengths away third, a head in front of Peterson, who broke just before reaching the straight. Direct Action, Golden Gate and Audo Spray followed. The second horse paid a better dividend than the winner. Haroto Stays On Jackie Logan £I,OIG and Salient £ 513 carried the big money in the Improvers’ Handicap, with Haroto £326 and My Thorpe £226 paying the dividends. Both favourites cut up badly at the start, Lord Lou, Pavlova and Nathaniel going away best. Haroto led into the straight the first time and passed the stands closely attended by Pavlova, Margaret Wallace, Nathaniel, Mountain Princess, Lord Lou and My Thorpe. At the half-mile, Haroto drew well away, following him being a bunch comprising Pavlova, Nathaniel, Mountain Princess, My Thorpe, Wrackeen. Haerenga Pai and Jackie Logan. My Thorpe chased Haroto into the straight, but failed by a couple of lengths to catch the leader. Wrackeen was four lengths away third, and Lady Barrington right up fourth. Then came Haerenga Pai, Kelp, Jackie Logan, Bell Dial, Limosa and Margaret Wallace. The favourite did so well after losing many lengths at the start that he might have won with a getaway.

A Splendid Colt Great Parrish (£1,411), Queen Elizabeth (£796), and Warspite (£705) were backers’ selections in the Parnell Handicap, and in the first case the favouritism was fully justified. Warspite went out very fast at the start, and when the field came round to the stands he was attended by Belle Axworthy, Ngahuia, Queen Elizabeth, Great Parrish, Great Ballin and Master ITuia. Belle Axworthy took up the role of pacemaker two furlongs farther on, and she was chased down the back stretch by Warspite, Queen Elizabeth, Great Parrish, Ngahuia and Great Ballin. The first-named had only a slight call over Great Parrish as they turned into the straight, and the latter was just ahead of Warspite, Queen Elizabeth, Master Huia and Great Ballin. The favourite drew out half-way down the running, and went on to win convincingly by a length and a-half. Belle Axworthy was two lengths clear of Warspite, and next in order came Queen Elizabeth. Master ITuia, Great Ballin and Our Nancy. Unlucky Raima

The bracketed pair, Bingen Starr and Peter McKinney, the choice of backers in the Mountain Handicap, carried £1,370, as against Etta Cole, £903, and Gold Sovereign, £Bl7. Etta Cole began best, and in the first furlong had charge from Gold Sovereign and Peter McKinney, with Dipnoi and Floraline breaking badly. Going out of the straight the first time, Etta

Cole was leading Tradesman, Gold Sovereign, Peter McKinney. Bingen Starr, The Tartar and Raima. When they came round to the stands again Etta Cole was still making play, there being no material change in the order. Going down the back Etta Cole, Tradesman, Gold Sovereign and Peter McKinney were all racing in close formation, but two furlongs from home Etta Cole left her feet, leaving Peter McKinney to turn for home ahead of Gold Sovereign. Raima. and Tiger Salve. Raima challenged strongly, but Gold Sovereign bored out. carrying the Hastings trotter with him. Peter McKinney, on the rails, won b}' half a head, with Gold Sovereign a neck in front of Raima. Etta Cole, Tradesman and Floraline were next to cioss the wire.

Joy Bird All the Way J. Shaw’s pair. Warplane and Carmel were entrusted with the position of favourites in the October Handicap and they went out supported to ttj.e extent of £l,-64, a slight call oiti Linkman, £1,200. Joy Bird was third favourite with £ <24. At the sta* Warplane broke, Joy Bird leading out from Sunfish and Goldman, and at the stands this trio were extended by Warplane, Stanmoor, The Shrew, All Bell and Linkman. Stanmoor displaced Warplane passing down the back and this was the only change in the order. Joy Bird still held command at the turn, where Sunfish, V arplane, Stanmoor. The Shrew and Linxman were in that order. The pacemaker maintained her position at the head of affairs in the run to the post, and beat Sunfish by a length and a quarter. Stanmoor was two lengths away third, and in fourth place Mas Dillon Iluon. who finished fast. The Shrew was next and then All 801 l and Linkman. Outsiders Fight It Out The Stewards’ Handicap was an unsatisfactory sort of race. The favourite, Sunsliower. £1.714, and third fanev Hal Chimes, £696, broke at the start, and during the running Reremai and Dick Dillon lost their drivers. Great Peter hopped away in front, and led past the stands from Explosion. Concertina. Lord Nepean and Evelyn Locanda. Great Peter was still'piloting this lot when they came round again, Sunsliower having joined issue. Three furlongs from the judge the leader signalled distress, and Explosion led into the straight from Sunsliower, Concertina, Great Peter, Evelvn Locanda and Rockburn. Once in line for the box the latter made a great effort and in a slashing finish suffered defeat by half a length, Explosion hanging on well. Sunsliower. who was unlucky, was a neck away third, closely followed by Concertina and Evelyn Locanda. Great Peter and Stoney were next to arrive. Explosion and Rockburn were not much fancied and both paid double figures. Easy for Vendome Mountain Dell. £1,151, Vendome, £915, and Sunfish. £832, were the favourites in the Electric Handicap, and the race proved the best of good things for Vendome. At the stands

the first time she was attended by • Mountain Dell. Florent, Sunfish, I Sailor Boy and Van Rich, and that w<as the order in which they raced down the back. At the turn Ven- j dome was three lengths clear of j Mountain Dell and Sunfish who were I together with Van Rich and ! Florent following. A furlong from home Vendome drew out and went on to win by three and a-half lengths .from j Sunfish, who beat Van Rich by two lengths. Mountain Dell, Floreni and Great Delight were next.
