Commendation!

OLD-TIME CHAMPION IS BACK TO FORM AGAIN IN THE SHADE SURPRISES WELLINGTON, Saturday. j The Wellington Racing Club began its spring meeting at Trentham today in glorious weather. There was a good crowd present, and the racing was first class. In the Shade’s brilliant victory in the "Wellington Racing Club Handicap gained him numerous admirers for his New Zealand Cup engagement, while Paganelli’s Shorts Handicap success has caused him to firm considerably for the Stewards Handicap. Beaumont showed a return to form when he “captured the Glen Hurdles from Aberfeldy and Tresham. He was never far from the leaders and down the back he headed Kapuna, and was galloping and jumping so well at that stage that it was apparent that he was going to be hard to beat. At the far turn he had Otaura Lass as his nearest attendant, but at the home bend Aberfeldy ran up to him. Beaumont, however, led the Riccarton horse over the last obstacle and, ridden out, beat Aberfeldy by half a length. Tresham finished strongly in third place a head behind Aberfeldy, and Modern, Kapuna and Elysianor were nearest of the others. Elysianor, •who carried heavy support, ran a peculiar race. He was first to show out, but passing the stands lie was steadied and allowed to drift. He got into a lot of bother down the back and finished so strongly in the straight as to suggest that with a. decent run he would have made it hard for the opposition. Third Only For Chief Link There was good wagering on thr Taita Handicap, and at the close of betting backers plumped for Chief Link, Tray Bond and Gesture. After a little delay at the start the field went away evenly, and Tray Bond soon hit the front. She had Lady Pam, Gesture, Chief Link and Ball Dress as her nearest attendants at the. entrance to the course proper, but a little farther on she drew out slightly. Inside the distance post Gesture ran up to Tray Bond, and for a while the pair ran stride for stride, but Tray Bond weakened in the closing stages and Gesture got the verdict by a length. Chief Link was half a length away third, and then followed Lady Pam, Merry Peel, Ball Dress and Joie de Val. Gesture, who is a bay filly by Chief Ruler from Nottava, finished very stoutly in the straight and apparently is a smart youngster; but Tray Bond also ran a good race. She received a bad bump at the start, and but for this may have opened up a break early that may have placed the issue beyond doubt. Chief Link, who has the makings of a very smart juvenile, finished determinedly to gain third place. He should not be long in winning another race.

Commendation Comes Back Commendation scored a brilliant victory in the Wainui Handicap, on his return to scale the former champion was accorded a great ovation. As a result of his brilliant trials on the Awapuni course the son of Limond wound up favourite. His connections were very optimistic about his chance, and Commendation thoroughly justified the heavy support accorded him. The three.-year-old Admiral Drake went out to make the pace, and when the field settled down his nearest rivals were Latin Quarter, Night Lad, Cashier, Great Charter, Commendation and Blimp. Admiral Drake continued to set a fast pace at the five furlongs, and when he led round the top from Latin Quarter, Cashier and Great Charter his admirers were on good terms with themselves. At this stage Commendation was standing the leaders up a good start, but before the turn was reached he began to make a forward move. When the field straightened up for home Admiral Drake looked a winner, but 100yds from the post Commendation, Prickles and Black Duke were coining last. Prickles headed Admiral Drake with 50y r ds to go, but here Commendation issued his final challenge, gathering up Prickles with his old-time brilliancy. The champion finished with a great burst of speed and was going away at the finish. Admiral Drake was a good third, and then followed Black Duke, Keddar. Blimp, Latin Quarter and Great Charter. Apparently Commendation is back to his best form again and he merely needs to keep well to take a hand in the settlement of the weight-for-age. races near at hand. Atholspear lost her rider (E. Burgess), after going three furlongs, and interfered with several of the runners. The lad was taken to the hospital and is believed to be suffering from a fractured skull. Lucky Light Surprises Lucky' Light scored a somewhat surprise victory in the Rimutaka Handicap. She was always handy, but in the straight she ran wide and finished in the centre of the course to beat

i Tourist by' a length and-half. I | Black was right up third, and then My , Own and Tigriano did best of the j others. Semper Paratus, who was havj ing his first race since a two-year-old. : ran promisingly and it may not be long i before he wins a race. He is a com- ) petitor for the New Zealand Derby'. N.Z. Cup Possibility Now ! Star Stranger was firm favourite for ! the "Wellington Racing Club Handicap, i but he was never prominent early, | though he finished very fast behind ; the placed horses. In the Shade, the ! winner, was always handy and halfway down the running he and Rabbi | were fighting out a great finish. In ; the Shade, however, did best in the : closing stages and on the post beat Rabbi by half a head. In the Shade hits now entered into New Zealand Cup discussions, and as he has previously shown that he can run a fast mile, he ? will only need to stay the cup distance to look a likely' light-weight. Seatown ran an excellent race into third place and is near his best again. Star Stranger’s finishing effort pleased his Cup admirers, and with 41b less off his back at Riccarton he is going to put up a big race. Hoylake ran only a fair race and will ! need to improve upon his running to- j

day to win the Cup. Piuthair faded in the run home, and Talisker found the distance too far for him. Good Thing Came Undone Simba was considered to have the Wellesley Stakes at his mercy—at least the totalisator said so; but he was decisively' beaten into third place by V atch Officer and Chrysology. At the straight entrance both Simba and Satisfy were fighting for supremaev, but passing the false rail Watch Officer shot to the front and opened up a break of two lengths from Simba. Watch Officer was not extended in the run home and won easily by* a couple of lengths from Chrysology. The latter came with a fast run over the last 100 yards, and at his next start should be hard to beat. Satisfy' ran below expectations, but a colt likely to improve a good deal is King Musket, who finished strongly in the straight. Paganelli Narrowly Paganelli gave further proof of his ability' as a sprinter when he scored a most impressive victory' in the Shorts Handicap. When the field came on to the course proper Aspiring was in the van, but she was followed closely' by Francolin, Silvermine, Paganelli and Toxeuma. Aspiring drew away at the false rail, but 100 yards from'the post Paganelli collared the Riccarton filly. Paganelli in turn was strongly challenged by Toxeuma, but he lasted long enough to win by a neck. First Money was two lengths away third, followed by Aspiring, Silvermine, Banket, Silver Paper, Reremoana and Goshawk. Paganelli’s success stamped him as real class, and despite his big weight in the Stewards’ Handicap he is going to take a lot of beating. Aspiring ran a great race and should soon be led in a winner. While Tcxeuma’s showing was impressive, Silver Paper was never sighted. He put in a swift run over the closing stages and was right up behind the placed horses at the end. Taurua Should Have Won Juggle proved too good for the opposition in the October Handicap. She ran to the front at the distance post and easily beat Taurua for first hon°M IS R Auda was a good third, and Richfield was close up next. Taurua, a full-brother to Te Monanui, was stopped half-way down the running, and should have been returned the winner. Glen Hurdle Handicap. of £350; 12 miles. —5 Beaumont. 9.6, H.
