LONDON’S POLICE FORCE
LORD BYNG MAKES GREAT IMPROVEMENTS MODERN INNOVATIONS Before the completion in November of his first year as Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, Lord Byng will have introduced reforms in the organisation and workiiig of the force which will make his occupation of that office memorable, says the London “Daily Mail.” He has purged the force, with the wholehearted co-operation of the police themselves, of elements which threatened to make it a byword, and has restored it to public confidence. The West End has been “cleaned up,” and a system of supervision and control introduced which gives promise of the end of night-club scandals.
The Flying Squad, one of the Yard’s most effective means of dealing with crime, is being made even more efficient by being provided with a new type of car, equipped with wireless installation of the latest kind. The Criminal Investigation Department is being augmented, and a thorough reorganisation of detective work is taking place. The uniform branch of the force is also being provided with better facilities for discharging its duties. They include police boxes which in effect will be miniature police stations for the temporary detention of prisoners and the receipt and communication of orders and information.
A special motor-car . service is being organised for visiting these boxes and removing prisoners. It is also anticipated that the box system will play an important part in dealing with motor banditry.
