BETTER ROADS

HIGHWAYS ESTIMATES LARGE SUMS TO BE SPENT MAIN SOUTH ROAD FIGURES THE SUN'S Parliamentary Reporter PARLIAMENT BLDGS., Friday. The Government's promise to provide better roads, particularly to back-blocks areas, is shown by the estimates under the Main Highways Board, Construction Fund. Most of tlie grants under this section are by subsidy, either «£3 for £l. £2 for £1 or £1 for £l. In some instances the grants are free, but these are very few. One of the most interesting items is the estimate for £ 51,940, for the Great South Road. The amount voted last year was £112.579, of which £73,043 was spent. The total expenditure on this road to March 31, 1929, was £193,473, and the estimate to complete the present proposals is set down at £340,530.
