GOVERNMENT TO ENCOURAGE PRIVATE ENTERPRISE MINISTER ON STATE TRADING “I am not here today to advocate the establishment of any new State department,” declared'the Minister of Industries and Commerce, the Hon. J. G. Cobbe, in openiug the annual conference of the Associated Chambers of Commerce this morning. His remark was greeted with a chorus of “Hear. hears.” The Minister had been relating how several years ago he had delivered a paper at such a conference advocating a State fire insurance scheme. “I still recall the debate that my paper aroused and the indignation that was expressed by some of the delegates at this invasion of the State into a realm which was exclusively under the control of private companies,” said Mr. Cobbe. ”1 do not hesitate to mention my activities here, because I am conscious of the fact that State fire insurance li come to stay in New Zealand. “It is the policy of the Government to encourage private enterprise in every legitimate way,” said the Minister amid aj>plause. “It is also our policy to ensure that Government trading ventures should bear the same taxation as private concerns.”
