DEATH OF LADY RHODES
SHORT ILLNESS ENDS FATALLY PROMINENT SOCIAL LEADER . (Special to THE SUXJ CHRISTCHURCH, Today. A praminent New Zealand social Jeadcr, Lady Rhodes, wife of the Hon. Sir R. Heaton Rhodes, Minister of Defencer in the Reform Government, died in Chyistchurch this morning after a_short ilfpcss. A native* of Glcnaru, Victoria, Lady Rhodes was the daughter of a well-
known station holder. Mr. Walter Clark. She married Sir Heaton in 1891 and since then has spent all her life in the Dominion. Lady Rhodes has occupied an important place in the political life of New Zealand, being identified with the* social activities of the Reform Party since it went into power under the late Rt. Hon. W. F. Massey in 1912, Sir Heaton being successively Post-master-General and Minister of Defence during Reform’s administration. Lady Rhodes was always interested in her husband’s work, and she has shown her enthusiasm in this direction by addressing meetings on behalf of her husband. She has figured largely in the social life of Christchurch. and was associated with many organisations. Lady Rhodes was a Lady of Grace of the order of St. John of England
