SWIMMING AT THE SHORE Devonport, and the North Shore generally, seem to be waking up and making use of the immense advantages it has in the way of beaches, to teach swimming. Last year, the public schools, both primary and secondary, made big efforts to get pupils to swim for the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association certificates, and for those issued by the Devonport Club. As an instance of what is being done, the certificates issued to pupils of the Vauxliall School, Devonport, on Saturday may be quoted. There were:—4 for the mile, 18 for the 880yds, 33 for 220yds, and 50 for the 50yds. In addition 18 novices’ certificates were issued by the Devonport Club. ' This school has already produced the junior girl champion of New Zealand, and if the effort to teach swimming is maintained, it is only a matter of a very few seasons and the Shore will be making a big impression in the swimming world.

SPEEDWAY IMPROVEMENTS WIDENING OF TRACK MORE SPEED AND SAFETY Improvements which have been carried out on the Mangere Speedway bv Mr. George Henning- called for high praise from the directors of the Auckland Automobile Racing Club, when they visited the track for the purpose of inspection yesterday. It war* considered that the coming season held, much for the sport. The track would be faster and safer and more spectacular racing - by both motor-cars and motor-cycles would be witnessed. The greatest amount of work has been carried out near the tinishingPost. while in parts the track has been widened by half a chain. The drain running round near the inner side of the track lias been tilled in, thus giving more width, and the swamp in th<* centre has been much improved by several miles of drains which ha\> been laid. All the corners have been cut away on the sharp turns, thus making it possible for drivers to take a wide swing with greater safety. This work | is being continued and will be com - i pleted for the first meeting of the season. which is to be staged on November 00. Mr. Ilenning is* also considering ; tne construction of a smaller track, j about half a mile in circumference, for | motor-cycle racing, and this may he I finished by Christmas. Arrangements are now in hand to provide better access to the speedway. I’ukaki Road is to be used as the ■ approach road, and entrance to the track will bo gained by 10 or 11 gates at intervals along the boundary of the property. This should obviate the traffic congestion which was so much in evidence last season. LIMIT MAN’S WIN ROAD CYCLE RACE PALMERSTON TO WELLINGTON Press Association WELLINGTON. Sunday.
