SLAUGHTER OF WHALES
EXTERMINATION DANGER FORESEEN INSPECTORS TO GO SOUTH Press Association WELLINGTON, Today. Tlie view expressed in the cable news that Antarctic whaling is being overdone is more or less confirmed from a financial point of view by tho masters of two of the big steamers here. They do not, however, give any opinion on the probability of the extermination of whales. One master declared that he had seen no diminution in tlie numbers in successive voyages. The Norwegian Government, it appears, is alive to the danger, and has sent an inspector on board the Sir James Clark Ross to see that the ’regulations are strictly observed. Immature animals, and cow whales with calves are not to be killed. Every portion of the carcase must be utilised. Captain Stuart, of the Nev/ Zealand Marine Department, will also leave in the C. A. Larsen in a similar capacity. That the present rate of killing threatens serious detriment to the whaling industry is the opinion of (he Whaling Committee of the International Council of Sea Exploration, says a London cable message of Saturday. It recommends the restriction of the capture of all species in the Antarctic and of certain species in the tropics.
