CRUELTY TO HORSE

BIRCHING FOR LAD DEATH OF ANIMAL Three lads aged 15 years were charged at the Otahuhu Police Court this morning before Mr. F. H. Levien, S.M., with cruelly ill-treating a horse at Hast Tamaki on September S. All pleaded guilty. James Gordon Gillard. farmer. Flat Bush, said he saw the three lads on September S. One lad came to his house and asked If he could leave a horse on his property as it was done up. Witness inspected the ; horse, which was lying down, and said the horse could not be put on his pro- j perty. Previously he had heard whips cracking. He saw blood trickling from a wound in the side. The horse was lying down on Sunday, but got up the next day and died on Tuesday. To the magistrate, witness said he saw the horse wandering round but | took no further interest in it. He thought it would get right. He did not notice tspurs or blood on one of the lad’s boots. The magistrate expressed surprise iat the little Interest taken in the j animal by witness, a practical farmer. I Constable Nield said he examined the dead horse. It had a hole in the right side. The hide showed whip marks all over the back and the shoulder was clotted with blood. He considered the horse had died of exhaustion. Constable Pollard corroborated this evidence. One lad was ordered to receive 12 strokes with the birch, and the charge against the others was dismissed.
