DAIRY BOARD CHAIRMAN’S COMMENTS CHEESE EXPORTS Press Association CARTERTON, Today. Mr. W. A. lorns, chairman of th« New Zealand Dairy Produce Board, during an address to farmers at Carterton yesterday, took the opportunity of answering criticism by Mr. Brechin who, at Tiraumea, stated that farmers suffered through the board’s mismanagement of shipping some of the cheese export. He said it was being carted round the coast for a period of 82 days. Mr. lorns characterised this statement as grossly exaggerated. The longest time any cheese had been carried round the coast to the final port of departure was 21 days. “There is one thing that must be readily recognised.” said Mr. lorns, “and that is, that it is possible for every factory to get produce to the final port for shipment and, necessarily, ships must call at various points to collect it. The reduction secured by the Dair” Board on marine insurance and cold storage is considerable and a further rebate of 5 per cent, on freights for the current year has been secured. This makes a total reduction of one-six-teenth of a penny a pound on cheese and the Butter Board’s levy on it is one sixty-fourth of penny in the £, and or butter, one thirty-second of a penny." The total saving in the costing of factories since the inception of th” board has been £300,000 a year. The reduction in marine freights alone, compared with rates paid by factories before the inception of the board would more than pay the factories’ levy to the board, Mr. lorns said. In the face of strong opposition Mr. lorns had advocated the system of a vote for every farmer, instead of having the matter left entirely in the hands of factory directors. Having this undoubted privilege, every dairy fanner should exercise it, he said.
