FRANCE ON TOP
ENGLISH FAILURES AT WIMBLEDON “ON UP-GRADE, HOWEVER” We have once again to admit the superiority of France and America in the two singles championships at Wimbledon, for two Frenchmen contested the men’s final, and two American girls the women's singles, says “Sporting Life” (London). The “passing ’ of Bill Tilden was a real regret to those who believed it —on bis form, and not for sentimental reasons that he was quite capable of winning his third British honour, and while few really anticipated an Austin victory over Borotra, there was a general hope that he might, after all, create a real surprise. But the British failure this year has been tempered by the thought that at last our lawn tennis is distinctly on the up-grade. I remember being rather dubious on this point even when that famous professional, Karl Kozeluh, attempted to convince me that such was the case, but any such doubts have now been dispelled.
