INVITATION TO AUSTRALIA DECLINED FINANCES UNCERTAIN Press Association WELLINGTON, Thursday. Invitations to New Zealand crews to coin pet© at the forthcoming championship regattas at Sydney and Melbourne were declined with regret at a meeting of the New Zealand Rowing Council last evening. The secretary. Mr. A. 1). Bayfield, said he had received advice from the New South Wales Rowing Association stating it was agreeable to alter the dates of its championship regatta to next March so that New Zealand crews would be able to compete. After consideration had been given to the proposals and replies from the local associations discussed, the following resolution was cabled to Sydney: •‘That the New Zealand Council greatly appreciates the offer of the New South Wales Association to alter the date of its championship regatta, but that, in view’ of the opinion expressed by local associations and the uncertainty of being able to finance the visit, the invitation for a New Zealand eight to compete cannot be accepted. The council cables its decision with great regret, and extends an invitation for a New South Wales eight to visit New Zealand to compete in the inter-pro-vincial eights and other races that may be arranged.” An invitation was also received from the Melbourne Amateur Regatta Association for a four to compete at the Australian Henley, on October 26. As it was reported that neither the Hamilton four nor the Union (Wanganui) four, which were first and second respectively in last year’s championship fours, was able to make the trip, the invitation was also declined with regret, for the reason that there did not appear to be a club four available up to the standard required.

BADMINTON CHAMPIONSHIP PROSPECTS NEXT WEEK’S TOURNAMENT BY “SHUTTLE" Interest in Badminton circles now centres on the championship tournament, to be staged at the Scots Hall on Thursday, Friday and Saturday of next week. Entries closed yesterday and are very good, with representation from several outside clubs. In all there will be well over 100 individual players engaged. The outside entries include Rogers, from Wellington, who is in all events; the Rev. Mr. Austin and the Rev. R. Creed Meredith, from Wanganui—Mr. Austin, by the way, is a housemaster at Wanganui Collegiate School. The Wanganui women include Mrs. Austin, Mrs. Meredith, and Misses Harden, Cowper and Wilson. Napier is sending Mrs. Hetley and Mrs. Harvey, who will defend their title in the women's doubles. Morrinsville is sending a contingent of over a dozen players, and the local clubs will all be represented. The first year events should arouse a great deal of interest, and will disclose a good standard of play. In the championship events the prospects are very open. The men’s singles should go either to Parnell or Northern, and perhaps the men’s doubles as well. Rogers, however, is a complete “dark horse ” who may upset calculations. Misses Ellett and Solomon, the Misses Waters, and Mrs. Hetley and Mrs. Harvey may fight out the women’s doubles, while Miss Ellett and Mrs. Hetley should make a great tussle of the women’s singles. Provision has been made for onlookers at the tournament, and good attendances are expected. The courts will run side by side, longways, instead of across the hall, with 2ft Gin in between the .courts. It is to be hoped the umpires will be vested with power to call “lets” if play on one court should interfere directly or indirectly with the other. JUNIOR SOCCER NOTES SECONDARY SCHOOL PLAYERS Senior B Bouts.—Last Saturday’s championship matches saw the positions of the two top teams unchanged, Philomel winning easily at home, but the Manurewans were fully extended to snatch a win from Northcote with the only goal scored. Corinthians slipped back two points after crashing heavily to Bon Accord, but the winner is still hard to pick. The final two matches are full of interest, tomorrow’s games being: Philomel v. Rangers; Bon Accord v. Corinthians; Manurewa v. Northcote. Secondary Schools’ Reps.—The Auckland Secondary Schools’ rep. team to meet the Wellington teams in Auckland on September 4-5 will be chosen from the following players, the trials being held next week: —Auckland Grammar School: Bvausch, Austin, Dixon, Basket, Turley. Technical College: Sloan, Thompson, Akhurst, Barry, Dallimore, Williams, Ross. Mount Albert Grammar School: Woods, Jepson, Rogers (A.), Rogers (R.), Toy, Lawrence. Takapuna Grammar School: Ferguson, Fraser, Farquharson, Hart. Form of Possibles.—Brausch Is a left half, who tackles well and is capable also of good, solid defence work when necessary. Austin usually occupies the insideright position. He is a very speedy forward. but only a fair shot. Dixon plays outside-riglit for Auckland Grammar. His ball control and footwork are good. Though he is rather stand-offish, yet on the whole his play is effective. Basket is a heavy, robust centre-half, who uses his weight to good advantage. Turley is a goalkeeper with good anticipation, 'but his cleai'ing is a little faulty. Technical Candidates.—Sloan is a prominent figure in the Tech, attack He is one of the best bustling forwards in the secondary schools. Thompson is the mainstay of the Tech, defence. At centrehalf he is a weighty factor on his side. Akhurst is a heavy left-winger. who possesses the speed essential for his position. Barry at halfback or fullback shines in positional play, and is a good tackier. Dallimore is a persistent right half, with good attacking and defending qualities. Williams is the Tech. goalie. He is outstanding by reason of clever anticipation and powerful clearing. Ross is a strong right back, who gave evidence of his sound tackling when his side played M.A.G.S. > Takapuna G.S.—At centre-forward position for Takapuna, Ferguson, though light. is a fast and effective player. Fraser is a little awkward at centrehalf, but he places the ball well. Farcin bar son is a steady fullback, who tackles well, but has a rather weak kick under pressure. Hart at fullback is not verv heavy, but is bold. Hev keeps is position well. Mount Albert.—Woods is the Mount Albert left winger. Ilis footwork is exceptionally clever and he is a strong shot. Jepson. centre-forward and captain of the light blues, is a neat but tricky forward, who shoots without anv hesitation, powerfully and often, with success. H. Rogers, inside right, and R Rogers, outside right, are a trir-kv pnir of forwards, who have an uncanny un derstanding of each other’s play. Toy at centre-half is sometimes reluctant to part with the ball, but his positional plav is sound. Lawrence is a strong tackier and possesses in addition a hefty kick
