JUNIOR NOTES PARS ABOUT THE PLAYERS Followed with the keenest interest by an enthusiastic crowd of barracket's, the Ponsonby A-Eden clash at Eden Park on Saturday was a hard struggle over the whore 90 minutes. Interest had been stimulated by expectancy of a fast, open game' from these two leaders in the junior A section, but followers were deeply disappointed. Ponsonby, recognising the superiority of Eden’s back division in a former game, concentrated in keeping the play tight and confined to the forwards. Effective as these tactics were, Ponies’ one point margin—winning by a potted goal to a penalty—was not a true indication of the merits, and taken all round Eden was unlucky. Enthusiasm exceeded bounds of discretion in the scrums early in the game and the referee had to warn both sets of forwards about swinging fists. The heavier Ponsonby pack displayed plenty of speed and dash in breaking through in the loose. Over-eagerness, however, was responsible for consider-

able off-side play, for which the wingforward, Summers, was a fairly consistent offender. This player, however, provided Ponies’ four points with a beautiful pot in the first spell. Gallaher was always prominent in the loose rushes and followed up consistently. He had an able support in Gladding, who worked honestly. .The backs’ activities were largely limited to the defensive, Conway and Pope of the inside men bearing the brunt of the heavv work very capably. Disorganised to some extent by the absence of three of the usual team and hampered by the opposition's determination to keep .play tight, Kden waged a desperate battle. Although harassed by fast breaking forwards, the backs opened up the game whenever possible with bright passing movements. Inglis at the base of the scrum gave an exceptionally bright display both on attack and defence, and invariably set his backs going smartly. The forwards worked well, but were not so vigorous as they might have been. McGregor and Hulme were the best of the pack on the day. Eden’s three points in the second spell came from a fine penalty kick by Hawkes. Strangely enough, a penalty kick saved Marist, leader 'in the junior B section, from going down to PublicWorks on the adjoining ground at Eden Park. The game was inclined to raggedness owing to the spoiling tactics adopted by the Public Works players, who had a decided advantage in weight in both forwards and backs. Al. Nathan, the hefty Public Works rover, was always in the picture in fast dribbling breakaways and following up, while his brother in the fiveeighth line displayed plenty of dash and resource on attack. In the Marist pack McVeagh was the undoubted leader. He grafted hard both in the scrums and loose. Trigg, on the wing, “gave it a go” every time the ball came his way, but without success. At fullback Loomb handled and kicked very soundly. Grafton juniors ran up a big score of 37 points to 3 against College Rifles on Saturday. The Magpies’ combination seems to be improving and the team may yet have some say in the section finals. Grafton fourth grade further strengthened its position on the championship ladder on Saturday by defeating Manukau in a fast, open game by eight points to three. Irwin kicked a penalty goal and converted a try scored by McGee of the Magpies, while May registered Manukau’s only try. The fourth grade competition is producing some splendid football and tomorrow' Grafton and Technical Old Boys, which have drawn twice with Manukau, will meet at Eden Park as a curtain-raiser. Both teams are now level in championship points.
