ATTRACTIVE ELLERSLIE CARD Tomorrow’s Prospects Reviewed THE first race meeting of tlie new season in the Auckland Province will he that of the Pakuranga Hunt Club at Ellerslie tomorrow. Of course, after the recent heavy rains, the going will be soft, at the best. Excellent fields have been paid up for, and the racing should be a promising start to the early spring carnivals. ‘‘Early Bird’s” review of the prospects is given below. UQ7 GREENMOUNT STEEPLES Of £200; about 2J miles Town Rambler 9 13 The half dozen in this opening: event contains nothing Marita ... 9 10 G f outstanding merit. Town Rambler has successfully ?M h rnniPt‘ *u 10 negotiated the Ellerslie country, his third to King’s Temperature . 9 10 Guard and Kauri Park in the Tamaki Steeplechase a Haeremai . . 9 7 couple of months ago, ten lengths behind the winner, qualifying him for favouritism in this lot. Marita is a good jumper, and Foxhound is just the sort that may spring a surprise. Sea Comet may not be ready, and little is known of Temperature. Haeremai is a possibility from Waverley, and he went over the country 12 months ago. They are only a moderate lot, in which favouritism should undoubtedly rest with:**— TOWN RAMBLER and HAEREMAI 10 17 HARRIS HUNTERS’ HURDLES lA*' l * Of £200; 1J miles Fair Abbey . 10 0 The top-weight has not been up long, but would Master Roley 9 9 only need \o be in something like his old form to A Delight 9 S account for this field. Abbot’s Delight, although no Kawiti . .* .* *. 9 0 champion, has a rare chance in this modest company*, Waiau Lady’ 9 0 and he may be the best- of the local hopes. Master f Master Roley has been placed over the sticks, and he Clements . 9 0 lias been given plenty of exercise following the hounds, faoairu .... . Kawiti is an indifferent jumper, and Waiau Lady is well spoken of. Master Clements and Soami are too iffy. Best-backed on the day may be: MASTER ROLEY and WAIAU LADY io C 7 SYLVIA PARK HANDICAP Of £200; 7 furlongs Partial it is almost certain that half of this Killute ... 0 0 in i . Others that may be fancied + 0 an extent are Valroe. Motere, Sea Cob, Diamond Queen, Measurer, Ruling Chief, Refresher, Valquette, Ding Dong, New Boy, Wild Countrv and Otranto. This is a rare opportunity for a smart three-year-old to get in and capture a stake, and that no doubt will encourage backers to plump for one of this age, and an older and seasoned horse. The pair are: MOTERE and REFRESHER t 49 JELLICOE HANDICAP 1.4& Of £450; 1 X miles High Pitch . 10 5 The majority of those horses The Lover *‘9o rr? down to contest this, the principal Zircon 9 0 Thm-sby 9 2 flat event of the day, has been Queen Arch . 9 0 Barometer ..91 racing during the winter, a notable vvelkiie ‘‘*9o True Blood . 9 0 exception being Desert Glow. Desert Glow may want a race, but he is well forward. King Emerald has been working well, and this time he may see the journey out. His form at Ellerslie in June was good. Thursby is a difficult horse to follow, | and his Gisborne performances left something to be desired. Barometer is a likely proposition, for one has a vivid recollection of his great finishing effort to get third to Seatown and King Emerald at Ellerslie in June. True Blood may not be tuned up as yet, but Maori Boy has had the racing, and still manages to receive more than his share of bad luck. Taneriri may be one of the hardest horses to beat, for his showing the first day at Trentham was firstclass. The Dover has to be caught right, and Zircon may not be up to this standard. King Willonyx is good when at his best, and Queen Arch fan a couple of good races at the Great Northern meeting. Valsier is well spoken of as a likely early winner, while Welkne is to take on better company than hitherto. Of Tinokoa, Sir Archie and Unoco the first mentioned may be preferred. It is something more than a useful field to sum up, but from High Pitch, King Emerald, Barometer, Taneriri and Queen Arch may come the winner. Actual favourites will probably be: HIGH PITCH and TANERIRI 9 97 PAKURANGA HUNT CUP £ ** £ '* Of £600; about 3 miles Odin . . . . 11 3 Half a dozen of those engaged in the big jumping Mataipuke 9 13 event also figure rn prior races, so that the earlier form Master Arch 9 13 may just possibly have an effect on the result of the Stonewall ..93 Hunt Cup. Odin is sure to be heavily supported, for his J Rambler 9 3 two successes at Ellerslie in June were not without merit. Pompeius . ! 9 0 Mashoor won over the country in the spring, paying a Terrapeen ..90 better than Subdivision price. Mataipuke has some fair Marita . . . 9 0 performances to his credit in the South Island, but he Soami ‘ 9 0 oughly seaspned. for he contested several similar races at Gisborne recently. Town Rambler is preferred to Stonewall, and the former’s obvious chance should be further enhanced if he scores in the opening race. Pompeius should go a great race, for it was sheer bad luck that prevented him from winning over this course 12 months ago. In the interim he has improved considerably as a fiat performer. Terrapeen is a possibility, and so are Marita and Haeremai. The favourites may be: ODIN and POMPEIUS 9 10 AUCKLAND HANDICAP OmkL* Qf £200; 1 mile Maori Boy . 10 13 Here again is a big field of hacks, Lord Bombarder .. 10 1 a certain indication that once more Hopetoun . 9 0 Wtokarite.: I 9 this class of event at Ellerslie prom- o p?hnisti * .\ 9 0 Justify ... 9 6 lses to be almost overcrowded. The fresh horses will be Calithe (winner of a similar race at the Hunt meeting at Havera in June), Charitaine, Perfecto and Negress. Paddon is in nicely, and if he has done the necessary amount of work after his easy Trentham win he will also be in great demand. Dave is fast coming back to form, and Bright Land also goes fast, but whether it will be good enough for this company is at present doubted. Marble King is very speedy, as witness his Trentham form. Oration is still moody; at Trentham he was always in the picture at the bottom of the straight and then turned it up. Standfast was in fine fettle at the Great Northern meeting, and his third to Lucv Rose and Black Duke on the middle day was impressive. Flying Prince was more than a useful* two-year-old last season, and Mark Mint has been racing prominently in hack company. Value. Automne and Ruffles have been rather disappointing: Ruffles is preferred of this trio. Palmares and Bennie ar»- possibilities, and so is Partial Eclipse. Master O’Rorke has run some good races of late, but the company may be a bit rich for Otranto. When it is all summed up backers may decide to adhere to winning form and plump for MARBLE KING and GOLD MONEY
