“TOO MUCH TALK”

MR. McDOUGALL MAKES PROTEST FILL PAGES OF HANSARD (The SUN’S Parliamentary Reporter) PARLIAMENT BLDGS., Wed. Some advice to the House to get on with its job and not to talk ad nauseam was the contribution of Mr. D. McDougall (Mataura), to the Parliamentary affairs this afternoon. It was Mr. McDougall’s first venture into the fields of oratory since his historic maiden speech. Parliament had been in session eight weeks, he contended, and nothing had been done but talk, talk, talk. “Instead of making such a fuss about Auckland and Christchurch tunnels and things,” he said, “it would be much better if we got down to work. One would think that Christchurch and Auckland were the only two spots in the Dominion. (Laughter.) As to the gentlemen who want to fill the pages of Hansard I would advise them to get up early in the morning and talk to the moon ” Here the House roared again. Mr. P. Fraser (Wellington Central), agreed with Mr. McDougall, but suggested that instead of advertising the fact Mr. McDougall should ask for permission to be admitted to Cabinet, where he could give a lecture to the Prime Minister and his colleagues on the subject. “You must be joking,” observed Mr. McDougall in surprised accents. Mr. Fraser continued that he wanted to congratulate the member for Auckland West, Mr. M. J. Savage. He wanted to congratulate him on— Mr. McDougall: Wasting time. “Tlie only time I noticed wasted,” retorted Mr. Fraser, “was when you spoke on the Address-in-Reply.” He was called to order and the little passage at arms was over.
