“LAUGH THAT OFF"

PLAY BEGINS TONIGHT Opening - this evening for a brief season at His Majesty’s Theatre, “Laugh That Off,” played by the J. C. Williamson, Ltd. Comedy Company, should be as successful in Auckland as it was in Australia. The company finished the productions of the popular comedy, “Applesauce,” with its wealth of Americanisms, last evening. A successful matinee was also held yesterday afternoon. It will be the first staging in Auckland of “Laugh That Off,” a clever and original comedy-drama. There will be three night performances after the opening this evening, and a matinee on Saturday afternoon. Mr. Alan Bunce and Miss Ruth Nugent achieved their best success in Australia with the play. The theme concerns three joyous young men in an apartment of their own. They have vowed to stand by each other through thick and thin, but temptation proves difficult sometimes. Miss Nugent, as Peggy, is charming. “She plays the part with exquisite comedy effect, and, in moments of pathos' and sentiment, was at her best,” wrote a Sydney critic. As Robert Elton Morse, Mr. Bunce plays cleverly. His ease of manner and a dry humour gives shrewdness to the clever nonsense of the hero. Otheis in the cast are Mr. George Henry Trader, Miss Gertrude Augarde, Miss Sadie Bedford, Mr. Reginald Newson ami Mr. Frank 11. Fox, a young English actor who is making his first appearance here. The successful American domestic comedy, “Pigs,” will be staged next Tuesday and Wednesday nights, and on Wednesday afternoon. The company leaves for Christchurch next Thursday. FIRE BRIGADE REUNION The annual reunion of the Onehunga Volunteer Fire Brigade will be held in the Onehunga Fire Station on Saturday evening next.
