SAFETY OF BRIDGE

HAMILTON COUNCIL SEEKS OUTSIDE ADVICE TO ALLAY PUBLIC ALARM (From Our Oirn Correspondent) HAMILTON", Wednesday. The Hamilton Borough Council at its meeting this evening decided to ask a firm of consulting engineers to report on the condition of the traffic bridgeSome months ago Mr. R. Worley, the borough engineer, issued a sensational report that the bridge had settled in its foundations, but it -was safe so long as there was no further increase in traffic. As the bridge is the only outlet from Hamilton to Rotorua, East Coast and Taupo traffic is not likely to decrease. Since the report grave fears concerning the safety and durability of the structure have been expressed, and the council, in order to allay public alarm, has decided to supplement the opinion of its own engineer. It is generally recognised that the provision of another traffic bridge will soon be a work of urgency. TALK OF NEW BRIDGE PREPARATION OF DATA PUBLIC EXPECTS ACTION (From Our Oxen Correspondent) HAMILTON, Today. Loan proposals for a new traffic bridge will soon be placed before Hamilton ratepayers if remarks made at the Borough Council meeting last evening are to be interpreted correctly. The Mayor, Mr. J. R. Fow, said the public was expecting some action from the council, and was realising that the question was one of increasing urgency. The question arose over a scheme providing for an alternative stock route, and the engineer was authorised to report on the possibilities of a new route. Cr. S. V. Tyler said the idea of a new bridge was more concrete than ever it had been. The engineer was already preparing data. He suggested this should be expedited.
