WAIUKU

In the second round of the South Auckland junior championship, the Waiuku representatives defeated Pukekohe by 14 points to 3, at Massey Park, on Saturday. A strong north-westerly wind made play somewhat tricky, but nevertheless the spectators were treated to some very good football. The Waiuku team has improved beyond recognition, and if the players only maintain their form of Saturday, they will be very hard to beat in the competition. The Waiuku forwards are a very even and hard-working lot and fully demonstrated their superiority over their opponents. The Waiuku backs are a very useful combination, but one of the fiveeighths must learn to take his man instead of trying to intercept passes, or elso he will bring disaster to his team.

Although two or three of the winners’ tries were the result of good play, the best score of the day was secured by Moyle. From a scrum about 15 yards from the Pukekohe line, McNaughton, at half, sent out to Moyle, who went as straight as a die for the line to beat about four tacklers. The try fully deserved the applause of the spectators. The display of the Pukekohe team was disappointing, but the players may have had a day off. Barriball, Moyle (2) and McNaughton scored tries for Waiuku, one being converted by Flavell. Graham kicked a penalty goal for Pukekohe.

Although the Waiuku team was considerably below representative standard, it had no difficulty in defeating the visiting University team by 20 points to 3. The Waiuku team was superior both in the forwards and backs, and had the visitors on the defensive most of the game. The visiting team was very disappointing to the spectators, and by the time the game was ended only a handful of spectators was present. Tries for Waijiku were scored by B. James (2), Atgar (2), Nepier, and Alyward, one of which was converted by B. James. McCoy scored an unconverted try for University.
