DARGAVILLE

Union Rugby

The combined University-Training College match with Northern Wairoa senior reps, attracted a great, crowd to Kugby Park on Saturday. The visitors gave a splendid exhibition, and the beautiful combination work and passing rushes of the backs was highly commented upon by local “fans.”

The Northern Wairoa forwards put in the best work of the home side, which played with most dash in the final quarter. Varsity-College had a very easy victory and made practically a procession of scoring, ending up with 33 points to nine. Goodwin, wing-threequarter (Varsity) created a rnild sensation by scoring four tries. His speed was his main factor of success. Taking the ball from passing rushes, he outclassed the Wairoa backs with his brilliant runs. Three of his tries were scored behind the goalposts. Converting three tries, Abbott, fpr the visitors,

showed his ability at kicking. From a particularly awkward angle, and with a strong wind against him, Abbott cleverly negotiated the first of these and received well-merited applause. He was outstanding as fullback. As a five-eight for the visitors, Macky was good. He got the ball away well. He was axso successful in converting two tries. Milliken put in plenty of good work on the wing for Varsity. Stone, Hodge and Jenkin scored a try each, making up the remainder of victors’ points.

For Northern Wairoa, Wilkins, Taylor and Bob Wilson scored a try each. Hemphill, Gorrie and Taylor were the best of the forward division, while Jones was noticed in some good spasms. Coleman, at half, also played well.

Several of Wairoa’s best players were unavailable, being away and in training with the North Auckland reps., who play Hawke’s Bay at Whangarei on Wednesday, and Auckland at Dargaville on Saturday.
