BENEFIT FIXTURE

IUCKLAND TROTTING SEASON OPENS EARLY SPLENDID ENTRIES i.p,r excellent," is the most fitting term to apply to the laminations received by the Auckland Trotting Club for its earth.liake relief fixture on August 31, the liberal response on all des, cannot be otherwise than "..tifving to the management of (’h, local light harness organisation. Th* high c>a*» list of entries assures the club that owners appreciate the effort being made for a worthy cause, and as the blic w i|| also be wholeheartedly behind the movement, all that is required to ensure a highly sueeessfu' function is fine weather. pleasing Feature i pleasing. feature of the nominona is the support accorded by «ners in various parts of the minion and particularly from CanbU ry. Many of the best horses in ; t ‘home of trotting” centre, appear V the lists, which is ample proof—if vjch be necessary—of the fine sporting ; irit of Southern owners, and a V P «ire to show practicable sympathy ith th A cause, and a recognition of hearty approbation of the kindly action which prompted the Auckland Club to such a charitable move. Canterfcury horses may or may not take part at the fixture, but their owners have eiven ft helping hand already by subscribing per medium of nomination yhe Personal Touch Mr. Geo. McMillan, the well-known successful owner and a prominent , member of the Auckland Club, i mentioned to the writer prior to leaving or the Christchurch carnival that he ; uould keep the benefit fixture before wners in the South, and it is evident hom the results attained, that apart from receiving numerous congratulations on the splendid performances of his young trotter Koro Peter, and ;ii« brilliant, if unlucky, escapades of pundas Boy, he found time to remind hi* sporting friends of the humane (unction arranged at Auckland for August 31. Improved Condition* The fine weather experienced last week was favourable for training operations at Epsom and Otahuhu, and mentors were not slow in seizing the opportunity to give their charges solid %-ork. The tracks were in good order »nd useful work was undertaken. With the meeting less than a fortnight off, randidatea for the function will require some speeding up in the interval to fit them for the interesting contests scheduled. The racing at- the Park on the deciding day promises to be full of interest. Th* Form That Tells Several horses that have been racing pt Addington during the recent threeday carnival, will be seen in action at the forthcoming function, and these rompetitors should be in excellent trim to tackle their less fortunate rivals. Some, engaged, raced prominently in the South, and while they travelled exceptionally fast on the ‘electric” track, under the new system of handicapping, they will be well placed at their next outing. Even so, they will meet with stout opposition from horses in this province, who were In form at the local winter fixture. The Longburn trainer, W. Hughes, Has four candidates •ntered for the fixture, which suggests that the Mitchell livery will again be seen waving in the breeze at Alexandra Park. The gallant Derby Lynn and Gang Awa’ represent the Palmerston North pacers, and the square-gaited element is represented by Rangitero and the promising young trotter Tamahine. If thi* team —or a portion of it—make* the trip North, Bill Hughes should have a good chance of adding to his new season's fine record. One That Will Be Tough The Ashhurst-trained Great Delight Is another Manawatu candidate that "ill in all probability be . geared up on the Park at the * 1 of the month. When last in Auckland, Harry Garnett took out a good stake with the Kea Dillon gelding and he went close to repeating the performance at Addington last week, where Great Delight separated Ground Light from Delightful at the post. Harry’s charge had to improve his time a whole heap to get second money, but he will only come 12 yards for his essay. In the race at Christchurch, there was plenty of “light” on the subject and the three placed horses put up a “delightful” performance. A Strong Hand Native Prince and Carmel, the Epsom-tralned pacers, more than paid expenses on their Addington trip. Both "ere returned winners on the middle day of the session, and so well did they Perform, that J. Shaw’s pair were expected to repeat the dose on the final day of the carnival. However, they failed to materialise, but the racing Tl 'ey have experienced will make the Epsom duo very fit horses for their Alexandra Park engagements. Shaw "ill also be represented on the day by Warplane, Stoney and Arachne. Awamutu Candidates As mentioned by “Abaydos” recently, Jack Kennerley has entered Peter Bingen, Rose Bingen, Te Wahia and “*lp, for th© approaching benefit carnival. The presence of the New Zearnd Cup and Free-for-all champion at the meeting, will create a good deal of interest in view of his cup engagement again in November. Te Wahia, a useful sort, will be making his debut op ft metropolitan course, and the Promising young pneer Help, will be Be «n in Auckland for the first time. Th* McMillan Livery AJan McMillan, the genial trainer rom Tamahere, has a useful quartette JJ Bhawah, Dawdler, Brutus and Peter -ioKinney engaged, and as all those Pamed were showing prominence, with®u* saing a situation, when last at Epsom, the wearers of the green nd oUck jacket should have something to * a >* in any event they are stepped out 0r - If Brutus can get back to his °rm of other days he will soon win ft sprint course, while Peter •jcKinney, who has just recently joined J* stable, will not be long in showing ft return. A U*«f u | Team Groat is busy again at Mangere >th a useful team, of which Tony ictor, Silver Link, Floraline and are being prepared for August The last-named, who has been °mewhat of a disappointment in his has just joined the Otahuhu . s '-ablUhment and the change may HVe the desired effect. Floraline f®r his success at Epsom in June, has “turned to Groat's care after a short ‘frspite on owner Carley’s selection. Will Have A Busy Time LT. Paul lias accorded his crack potter —who has been oft' the scene for \ me time past—a nomination for the ivm • nc * benefit fixture and this fact 11 *n itself, be gratifying to the many snarers of the Gold Bell square-gaiter, u suggests he will soon be seen ac tion again. Nelson Tasker, ( \ Hnorpe and the Derby candidate, r eat Parrish, are also engaged, and Alangeve enthusiast will hold a good J*rr> at ° nc * the month. As pi'*’ a,so drives Akanehi and Peter r ate in their engagements, he should av ® ft busy time on race day.
