CAPTAIN E. F. WALLACK A well-known and popular figure in marine circles at Fiji, Captain E. F. Wallack. harbourmaster at Levuka. died suddenly on July 27.' Captain Wallack had been in illhealth for some time, and Captain Lippett had been relieving him in his duties, but his death was unexpected and came as a shock to the community. He leaves a wife and daughter. Captain Wallack was the son of Brigadier Wallack and had served with the Australian Artillery in the Boer War. After serving for man.v.years in the Fiji Interinsular trade he joined the Fiji Civil Service as master of the Government yacht Ranadi in the year 1914, and in July, 1922, he was appointed harbourmaster at Levuka. which position he held until his death at the age of 47.

TWO FIJI RESIDENTS

Two prominent and respected residents of Fiji, Mr. Herbert Set on De Maus and Mr. James McConnell, died at their homes in the Islands last month.

Mr. De Maus. who died suddenly a: his home in Suva, was born in Levuka 57 years ago and spent his earlic.»r years in Christchurch, where he became prominent in cricket circles and represented Canterbury Province. Later he returned to Fiji and worked as an accountant until his death. He was a keen musician. Mr. De Maus is survived by his wife, one son, Mr. Keith De Maus. who is in the Army in England, and one daughter, Mrs. Orma Bristow', of Labasa. Mr. McConnell died at his home Ardmore Hall, on the Island of Taveuni. at the age of 87. He was one of the oldest living colonists in Fiji. Born at Outrim, Ireland. Mr. McConnell was educated at Belfast University and went to Australia as a cadet with the late Sir Samuel Wilson, of Victoria. After three years he left that service and engaged’ in driving sheep across the continent.

Leaving Australia in 1868, Mi*. McConnell went to Fiji and settled on the estate, which he owned until hjs death. Of late years Mr. McConnell had retired from active life, his son. Mr. Arthur McConnell, managing the estate. He was keenly interested in politics, in which he took a prominent part. Mr. McConnell, who was twice married, is survived by his wife, two sons. Mr. Arthur McConnell and Mr. Percy McConnell, and one daughter. MR. G. N. HAYES The death occurred last night at Dargaville of Mr. Gilbert Nelson Hayes, of the legal firm of Hayes, Mitchell and Gould ing. Mr. Hayes, who was born at Waimate, Canterbury, went to Dargaville 23 years ago and set up practice with Mr. E. T. Field, later taking the late Mr. C. Darling and Mr. G. S. Mitchell into the business unde:’ the name of Hayes, Darling and Mitchell. Mr. Hayes was senior counsel at the Dargaville Bar, and was recognised as a clever pleader. He took a keen interest in local affairs, and at the tim** of his death was a member of the Kaipara Licensing Committee. Also, he served for some years on the Dargaville Fire Board. He was a past president of the Racing Club and Bowling Club, and was also an enthusiastic Freemason, being a P.M. of Lodge St. George 1801, E.C. He was a man of very liberal disposition and gave freely to all charities. An outstanding gift was the post office tower clock, erected at a cost of over £I.OOO in memory of his late partner, Mr. Charles Darling. Mr. Hayes is survived by his widow and two young children.
