HURT ON GREAT BARRIER

FARMER BROUGHT BY LAUNCH TO HOSPITAL LONG ROUGH JOURNEY Breaking his ankle while mustering sheep on Great Barrier island on Thursday morning, Mr. H. J. Cave, a farmer aged 60, of Tryphena, reached the Auckland Hospital last evening after an eight-hour launch trip through rough seas. Mr. Cave, with, three young men, was mustering over rough and wet country when he slipped and fell. The accident occurred about three miles from Tryphena, and there was great difficulty In carrying him in, two of his companions bringing him on an improvised stretcher while the third went for a relief party. When Mr. Cave reached Tryphena It was fairly late in the afternoon and the sea was running too high to risk a launch passage. Yesterday morning, however, the waves had moderated, though the weather was still stormy, and the launch Rosella, piloted by Mr. A. Blackwell, left the island with Mr. Cave at eight o’clock. Until the vessel reached Tiri Tiri she was badly knocked about by the south-west gale that was blowing. Waves continually broke over her and only a tarpaulin stretched from the after part of the cabin roof to the dinghy lashed across the stern saved the passenger from being soaked. After Tiri Tiri, however, the weather improved and the launch reached Auckland at about four o’clock. The story of the accident had been telegraphed to Auckland and the St. John Ambulance was waiting to take Mr. Cave to hospital. He was admitted and this morning it was reported that his condition was satisfactory.
