KEEP WARM!

BRAVING COLD IN NATIONAL PARK EQUIPMENT NECESSARY To visit the Tongariro National Park during winter one must carry the contents of a goodly-sized general store. A perusal of the articles required by members of the Ruapehu Ski Club for the forthcoming winter sports party to be held between August 28 and September 9 makes interesting reading. For men, the following outfit is suggested, in addition to warm clothing: One sleeping bag, travelling rug (if possible), alpine rucsac, large enough to hold two blankets; underclothing; loaf of bread and two 41b tins of fruit; pair heavy watertight boots (two pairs are recommended), with square-headed golf nails, and well oiled with raw castor oil put on hot. It is essential that boots should be strong and watertight, and thoroughly “broken in” before the trip; extra pair leather bootlaces, and two pairs thick inner soles; one or two pairs riding trousers, or one pair of riding and one pair long trousers; four pairs thick socks or stockings; one pair puttees; two jerseys or cardigan jackets; two woollen singlets; felt hat; one jacket; two pairs underpants; two woollen skirts; balaclava (woollen or leather); pair snow goggles; pair heavy woollen gloves (military pattern). Good gloves are very important and properlined mountaineering gloves for preference; light overcoat (wind and waterproof) to wear on the mountain; pair of warm shoes or slippers to wear in the chateau at night; personal toilet gear and zinc ointment; tolet lanoline or powder to prevent sunburn. Good zinc ointment is recommended. Also take a camera, films, musical instruments, and small appliances and materials to assist in the making of dresses for the club’s annual impromptu fancy dress ball. It has been the custom during past years not to take complete fancy dresses. Women are advised to take the following:—

One sleeping bag; travelling rug; small rucsac or haversack; one or two pairs of men’s riding trousers, or short skirts and gaiters; two complete changes of warm underclothing; two jerseys or cardigans; one small hat (leather, felt or oilskin) to keep off sun and to wear in wind apd rain. Also needed are:—One or two pairs boy’s watertight boots, with squareheaded golf nails and oiled with raw castor oil, applied hot; one pair puttees, or stockings, and three pairs woollen socks; pne hot water bag, if desired; also the last seven items on the men’s list.
