AUSTRALIAN STEAMERS
SOUTH ISLAND’S NEEDS (THE SUN’S Parliamentary Reporter) PARLIAMENT BLDG., Friday. Discussing the inter-colonial steamer service, during his maiden speech in the House of Representatives today, the Minister of Railways, the Hon. W. B. Taverner, stated that the Government’s intention to re-establish the South Island-Australia steamer service was of great importance, as at present the majority of Australians and visitors to New Zealand, via Australia, necessarily came into northern ports. If they travelled to the South, they were faced with the necessity of going back over the same ground, and again departing from a northern port. He felt most strongly that a very great and widespread benefit to all concerned would be brought about when the service was functioning properly. It was essential, however, that the steamers provided bo modern and reasonably fast.
