Shore Leaguers Again

PONSONBY TO PROVIDE TEST Exciting Tussle Promised START OF SECOND ROUND yilE first games in the second round of the Auckland Rugby 1 League s senior grade competition will be played tomorrow. In the feature clash, Devonport and Ponsonby, the two leading teams, will meet, and this game promises to be the most interesting played this season. In the first round Shore narrowly defeated Ponsonby, a side which has shown a marked improvement since.

Both Shore and the Ironies play a. similar style of football, the open i-ame, which is so popular with the *ans. With St. George hooking for the Seasiders, Ponsonby is going to And it hard if its crack hooker. Stevens, is not sufficiently recovered troro his injuries to take the field, but so long as the Ponsonby second row Will put a little more weight into the scrums than usual it would assist materially. Of course, to make any sort of a showing at all Shore will need to play a different class of game from that which they played last .Saturday, but with its usual team taking the field again this can be expected and if there are any odds at all they must go to Shore. The curtain-raiser to bo played between City and Kingsland will finish at 3 P-m. sharp, so as to ensure the chief match being finished in a good light. On No. 2 ground Newton plays Marist. while Richmond tries conclusions with illlerslic in the earlipr flxturc. JUNIOR NOTES Throughout this season senior cur-tain-raiser games have been played at Carlaw Park, and consequently the junior thirteens have not seen as much of the main area at League headquarters as they have done in previous years. The Auckland League however recently decided to revert to the old conditions of giving the juniors the cur-tain-raisers to the senior game. How They Stand In the second grade Mount Albert and Shore are both leading with equal points. By Ponsonby B defeating Kingsland in the third grade open, Richmond takes the lead in this competition by two points. In the third intermediate grade Shore is leading by one points, while in the fourth grade Shore and Richmond are unbeaten. Richmond is leading in the fifth, sixth A and sixth B grades.

Kingsland Fourths The Kingsland fourth grade side had an easy match last Saturday. It is a good team and is lying two points down in the championship. Its two fiveeighths, Tunnicliff and Moran, combine well and give some fine exhibitions, but if they were favoured with better passes from half-back Robinson, who is sound in other respects, they would possibly make a better showing. Hughes has proved himself a sound fullback, while Fox, Sandall, McCamish and Smith have all proved themselves handy men. Schoolboys An interesting Primary Schools’ match was witnessed at Carlaw Park last Saturday, when Newton defeated Papatoetoe by 1(5 points to 10. Newton’s scorers were Ellis, Hockey and Godfrey, while Ellis was one of the most outstanding backs cn the field. Taylor was undoubtedly the star among the forwards, and although he has the unfortunate habit of breaking away too soon, he is the making of a good footballer. The Newmarket schoolboys’ team travelled to Mount Albert, and after a good even game was successful in clinching a victory by 3 points to 5. Both the Newmarket and Mount Albert boys are showing a marked improvement in their play. Too Much Talking The Newmarket third intermediate met Shore at Devonport on Saturday, and after a hard game was beaten by a narrow margin, 6—5. The game was marred, however, by too much talking on the field, and the Newmarket Leaguers were the chief offenders. With Ten Men Newmarket sixth grade A journeyed to Northcote and was beaten by 21 points to 0. The game was very even until the last quarter, when Newmarket lost Carey, who received injuries. In fact, up until this, Newmarket had only 10 men, and when it lost Carey, Shore began to pile on the points. It indeed says very little for those members of the Newmarket team who failed to turn rip. With a full team, Newmarket would have been almost certain of a victory. A Great Game Mount Albert and Mount Wellington second graders met on the former team’s ground on Saturday. The game was favoured with an attendance of between 300 and 400 spectators. It was a great exhibition of the ■ eague code, both sides being at the top of their form and throwing the ball about with uncanny precision. Many brilliant movements were Drought off, especially those connected with two of Mount Albert’s tries. Bagnall at fullback for Mount Albert was outstanding. He kicks well and is very safe with his hands, while he is a master at running up to send his backs away. Other prominent rearguarders were Wilson, IvlcDonald, and Jamieson, while the pick of a hardworking pack was in Akehurst and Twining. Jacobs handled the Mount Wellington team well, and the manner in which he made attacks for his backs, makes him. worthy of a place in a higher grade side. The forwards all worked hard and combined well with their rearguard. Only the solid tackling on both sides prevented higher scoring on either side.
