STREET NAME CHANGES

CR. ALICE BASTEN MAKES PLEA FOR KOHI COMMEMORATING BISHOPS When over a hundred proposed alterations to street names in the Avondale and Tamaki ; districts came before a special meeting of the City Council yesterday afternoon Cr. Alice Basten made a strong and successful plea for the retention of names commemorating early missionary bishops. THE suggestions had already been “*■ accepted by the old council and it was expected that only formal approval by resolution would bo necessary. Instead, however, an animated discussion lasting 40 minutes took place. In the absence of the Mayor, Ml*. G. Baildon, who was in Wellington, and the Deputy-Mayor, Mr. A. J. Entrican, Mr. J. Dempsey was elected to the chair. ‘T am not much good at Maori names and I think the average citizen is not either,” remarked the chairman when Cr. J. R. Lundon asked if the translations could be made known. Cr. H. P. Burton: Three-fourths of these apply to Avondale and I am wondering if it is safe to go back there. (Laughter.) Cr. Basten: Some will not be well received in Tamaki. Cr. G. W. Hutchison was assured by the chairman that after the names had been advertised residents -would have the right to object. Cr. Lundon: Personally I would like to know more about the alterations because some of the proposed native words are not mentioned in polite society. (Laughter.) The first suggestion is that Archhill Road be called Tuarangi Road. I think the whole lot might be called Porangi (mad). Cr. Basten objected to the changing of Atkin Avenue, Tamaki, to Ahumai Avenue, because the present name is that of a very old and respected resident. Cowie Avenue, Patteson Avenue and Selwyn Road all commemorated pioneer or missionary bishops and ought to be retained because they formed part of a series of ecclesiastical nomenclature. Cr. Basten’s objections were supported by an easy majority of councillors and the existing names will be adhered to. The whole list will be advertised and residents will have opportunity to voice any objections.
