RIALTO AND REGENT, EPSOM

“THE NIGHT BIRD” On© of the most popular comedians on the screen, Reginald Denny, plays the leading role in “The Night Bird,” one of the attractive films now at the Rialto and Regent, Epsom, Theatres. The supporting cast includes Betsy Dee, Sam Hardy and many others. The story concerns “Kid” Davis, who is introduced into society by an ambitious manager. The boxer’s confusion on meeting a pretty girl cause a series of exceptionally humorous complications. At both theatres the second attraction is “Love and the Devil,” a romantic story laid in Africa, London and Venice, starring Maria Corda and Milton Sills.

“MOTHER KNOWS BEST” AT LYRIC

“Mother Knows Best” is the picture which heads the new programme at the Lyric Theatre this evening.. A new Madge Bellamy is seen in the new picture, “Mother Knows Best,” a story of stage life and a young actress and her mother, a story that has had its counterpart since the stage began, and still has every day of its existence. Hitherto Miss Bellamy has been a very excellent and popular light comedy portrayer. “Mother Knows Best” is the first picture in which she has nlaved in an emotional role. It is a tribute to her own art, and the careful direction of John Blystone, that she proves a revelation. Louise Dresser, whose charm and art are akin to her popularity with picturegoers, plays the mother role, and the supporting cast includes such seasoned and popular players as Barry Norton, Albert Gran and Lucien Littlefield. “Strong Boy,” the second big attraction, is a'delightful tale starring Victor McLaglen as a railway station porter. “THE RINGER” AT GRAND Splendid character acting is one of the many features of the film version of Edgar Wallace’s popular mystery book and play, “The Ringer,” now screening at the Grand Theatre. A fine cast is headed by England’s leading character actor, Leslie Faber. His performance as Dr. Lomond is excellent and remarkably con\ f cing. Annete Benson, as “ # ra Ann.” is most fascinating and both acts and wears her clothes admirably. Nigel Barrie, who has been seen in many American films, is also in the cast, which includes Muriel Angelus, a new screen discovery, and Lawson Butt, a brother of Dame Clara Butt. The picture version of the play starts a little earlier and helps thereby to plant the main theme, but retains to the full the mounting mystery and suspense. “Mother Knows Best,” which is also being shown, is an engrossing story of a mother who dominates her daughter, a famous actress. Madge Bellamy is the star.
