OPOTIKI NOTES

The following officers were elected at the first annual meeting of the Opotiki Sunshine League: President, Mrs. Stuart; vice-presidents. Mesdames Steele and Morris: secretary, Mrs. C. Fleming; treasurer, Mrs. Davey; committee, Mesdames J. G. Murray, Burgess, Skuse, Sinclair, Draper, Hird, C. Gordon, Downey, Morrice. Kirbride, Steele, Quirk. The membership now totals SS. Since its inception the league has done much good work in providing comforts at the Public Hospital, members also paying periodical visits to the institution.

The, receipts during the year amounted to £2Ol 9s 4d. At the end of the year there was a credit balance of £lO4 6s Id. Moody; auditor, Mr. El. Jessop; secretary. Mr. Charles Fleming. The postmaster at Gisborne notified the chamber that the sorting of mails on their arrivcl at Opotiki on Saturday night could not be considered. Tho president. Mr. Scott, was appointed to represent the chamber at the conference of chambers of commerce to bo held at Auckland on July 10. It. was decided that the district could not undertake a district court at the Auckland Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s Winter Exhibition. It was resolved to write to the postal authorities again, asking that Opotiki should have a daily parcel mail from Auckland. The annual report stated that several matters had been brought to fruition during the year, one of the most important being the continuous telephone service, which was greatly appreciated. Progress in the construction of the East Coast, main road had been well maintained, the Motu bridge would shortly be opened, and communication to Te Kaha should be established within a few months, and communication with Gisborne, via East Cape should be established within the next two or three years, if the present rate of progress is maintained. Tho chamber has battled hard for the continuation of the East Coast main trunk railway to Opotiki, and it is hoped that some definite pronouncement will be made by the Government on this important question during the coming session of Parliament.
