PAYMENT IN LABOUR
RATEPAYER’S OFFER REJECTED HILARITY AT TAKAPUNA Amusement was caused at last night’s meeting of the Takapuna Borough Council when a letter from a ratepayer of Jutland Road extension was read. Enclosing a cheque for £SO on ac count of rates due, the writer made an offer to the council to work out the balance, or any portion of it, on improvements to the road in the vicinity of his holding. “As regards this locality,” the letter said, “nothing in the way of improvements has been done since the area was taken over from the Almighty hundreds of years ago.” After a debate punctuated with mild hilarity, the council resolved that it could not agree to the offer made.
