CHICAGO NERVOUS ABOUT FARM RELIE* SENATE ATTITUDE TO BILL ('Australian and X.Z. Press Association) Reed. 9.5 a.m. CHICAGO, Wednesday. The Senate’s failure to accept the Farm Relief Bill passed by the House of Representatives removed the main prop from the wheat market and sent prices tumbling at the opening; but reports that the advocates of the debenture clause would work for its inclusion in the Tariff Bill and permit the farm legislation to go through unhindered restored more confidence. Later, nevertheless, sentiment continued nervous, and closing levels remained considerably lower, namely, July, 1 dollar 52 cents a bushel; September, 1 dollar 10-! cents; December, 1 dollar 151 cents. MINING NEWS HAURAKI. —The manger reports:— ‘ The winze below the 400 ft level at the junction of the Union Beach Cross reef has been sunk to a depth of 20ft, at which point an increased flow of water was met with. Preparations are well under way for installing a small Cameron pump to deal with the water. Three faces were started today in the slopes above the level on the Stockwood. Part of last week was employed in rising lor the second ladder road, and no quartz was taken down in the slope where the gold was got. The compressed air pipeline is being relaid to the seaward face; this had to be taken down while the winze chamber and rise for ladder road was being cut. On Saturday afternoon the water supply was cut off for cleaning purposes, and we took the advantage of overhauling the pumping machinery, which is again in good condition and easily dealing with the winter flow.”
