Emden Controversy Becomes Involved
CONSUL’S DECLARATION
MR. LANGGUTH DELAYS COMMENT “There seems to be a bit of a squabble over the position at present,” said Mr. E. Langguth. when asked by THE SUN to comment on the latest developments in the controversy over the entertainment of the Emden. rpHE German Consul at Wellington. Mr. W. Penseler. has explained his suggestion to the Mayor of Auckland. that a civic reception to the Emden’s crew was not sought. Replying to the telegram from the Auckland committee, protesting against his action. Mr. Penseler has telegraphed as follows: “Please understand that my action was not a request to the Mayor of Auckland to cancel an existing arrangement for a civic reception, hut a sugestion. if deemed advisable, to abandon a reported proposal for such an arrangement. Existing conditions fully justified my action. Have no right insisting officially upon Mayor granting a civic reception, which function exceeds the usual courtesies. To beg for favours would be undignified My attitude is approved. Please desist from agitation and do not spoil our good cause. The just sense of New Zealand will assert itself against unfriendly or vacillating attitudes." “I have no personal statement to make.” said Mr. Langguth this morning. “We will have a committee meeting first, and anything said will have the full backing of the committee. There seems to be a bit of a squabble over the position at present.*’
