FOR CAULFIELD CUP

NIGHT MARCH AND HONOUR In past years the Dominion has been represented in the Caulfield Cup on numerous occasions. For this year’s event several Canterbury horses have been engaged, and with such strong representation as Nightmarcli, Honour, Paquito and Arikiwai it is quite within the bounds that one of that number will play an important part in the decision, says the Christchurch “Sun.” Nightmarcli. New Zealand Derby winner, will perhaps be the Riccarton hope. The Night Raid colt is again a daily attendant at the Riccarton tracks after a brief respite, and he looks so well after his hard racing this season that the probabilities are that he will be mightier than ever next term. There was great merit in his Great Autumn victory, which was accomplished at his last start, and he is the ideal horse for a race such as the Caulfield Cup. What Weight? But Australian bandicappers are hard upon New Zealand performers, and with such strong qualifications, they will not take any undue risks with Nightmarch. According to present plans he will make his first appearance at Sydney, but afterwards, provided, of course, that he trains on well in the meantime, his itinerary will be extended to Melbourne, where he lias such important engagements as the Toorak Handicap, Caulfield Cup, Williamstown Cup, Moonee Valley Cup and Melbourne Cup. The crack Riccarton colt Honour, already a popular fancy for the A.J.C. Derby, is certain to be among the favourites for the Caulfield Cup should he win the classic. He is such a brilliant customer that the big Caulfield event should suit him. He has the necessary brilliance to be always within striking distance of the leaders, and it would only seem a matter of his developing stamina to see out a solidly-run 12 furlongs. Honour is in the best of health at present, and trainer P. V. Mason has already begun to put the polish on him for spring racing. Trainer F. D. Jones has Limerick, Paquito and Arikiwai in preparation for spring racing. The two last-named have been accorded a. nomination for the Caulfield Cup, so apparently Jones intends to take a team to Victoria at the conclusion of the A.J.C. spring carnival. Paquito impressed Sydney critics in no uncertain fashion by his exploits at the autumn meetings, and he is just the sort who may annex a big handicap. Arikiwai is quite sound at present, but whether he will stand up to solid training remains to be seen However, he has previously shown that he is a smart galloper, and if Jones succeeds in getting him to stand up to a preparation he should more than pay his way.
