FATHER B. J. RYAN

Father B. J. Ryan, rector of St. Patrick’s College since the end of January, 1928, has died at Wellington, at the age of 39. He was born at Wellington and educated at Meeanee, Hawke’s Bay-. He was ordained as priest in 1915. He graduated from Victoria College in 1918. He was in liis usual health until the beginning of last week. The funeral is to be held on Friday morning.—P.A. MRS. GEORGE DIDSBURY Mrs. George Hidsbury. widow of the late Mr. George Hidsbury, of Wellington, died at her home in Wellington j on Sunday, at the age of 87. Born in London, Mrs. Hidsbury arrived in Auckland in 1859, later moving to New Ply-mouth. At the beginning of the Maori War she went to Nelson, but when hostilities ceased she returned to Taranaki and later to Auckland. She married Mr. Hidsbury in 1868. Mrs. Hidsbury is survived by four sons, Messrs. H. M. Hidsbury, Auckland, P. G. Hidsbury, Kaikohe, K. J. Hidsbury, Eketahuna, and H. G. Hidsbury', Wellington, and one daughter Miss Eileen Hidsbury, Wellington. MR. LEWIS SMITH With the death of Mr. Lewis Smith on Monday evening at his residence, 19 Birdwood Crescent, Parnell, the New Zealand frozen meat industry has lost one of its best-known leaders. Mr. Smith, who was 62 years of age, was born in Wellington, and at an earlyage commenced work with the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company, with whom he stay-ed for about 25 years, being stationed in various parts of Canterbury. Later he joined the Wellington Farmers' Company and was J static ned at Masterton, where he acted as buyer for the firm. On the opening of the Westfield Freezing Works, Mr. Smith joined up with the company, occupying the position of head fellmonger at the time of his death. For two and a-half years during the war period he was stationed in the East, at Harbin, Manchuria, and during that time passed through several thrilling adventures. On one occasion he was captured by Bolshevik troops and sentenced to be shot as a German spy-. Only a timely arrival of his Chinese servant with his passport to prove his identity saved him from death. No man was more respected by those who worked with him than Mr. Smith. Of a quiet, retiring disposition, he took no active part in public life, but was always foremost in helping a good cause. He is survived by- his widow, three sons and a daughter—Fred (Auckland), Albert (Te Arolia), Waltex(Remuera), and Mrs. Eric Chambers (Birkenhead;. A son, Sydney-, was killed in the Great War. DR. J M. WARREN A medical practitioner well known in the Temuka and Marton districts and an enthusiastic member of the Overseas League, Hr. John Monteith Warren died at the Auckland Hospital on Sunday morning after a prolonged illness. He was 76 years of age. Hr. Warren was born of Irish parents at Baltimore. U.S.A., but his parents returned to Ireland when he was still an infant, and he was brought up at Ennis, in County Clare. Pie studied for medicine, chiefly at Queen’s University. and gained the degrees of M.H., M.Ch. and L.M. He married and settled in New Zealand in the ’eighties. Mrs. Warren died in 1894. Marrying again in 1896, Hr. Warren went into practice in Temuka, Canterbury, and lived there for 11 years. A nervous breakdown necessitated his relinquishing his work and going into retirement for a year. In 1909 he commenced practising again in Marton, where he lived for 17 years. Heart trouble and generally failing health eventually- forced him to retire finally from his profession and in 1926 he came to Auckland. Hr. Warren is survived by his wife, one daughter. Miss A. M. Warren, of Christchurch, and two sons. Messrs. •T. L. R. Warren, of Wellington, and R M. R. Warren, of Auckland.
