MAORI IN DOCK
QUARREL WITH HINDU TOTAL PENALTY IS £3 16/A quarrel with a Hindu resulted in the appearance of George Benjamin Hughes, a Maori seaman aged 29, at the Police Court this morning. Hughes pleaded guilty on a charge of assaulting Morar Hiri on June 8. Sub-Inspector McCarthy was of the opinion that the assault was not as rious as it was first thought to be iiiri had been sent to the hospital, but it was mainly through hysteria. The cause of the assault was believed to be a racial difference. Hughes had struck the Hindu who had defended himself. The assaulted man had gone out to the street, but Hughes had followed him and was again seen to strike the Hindu. A fine of £1 was imposed and Hughes was ordered to pay costs, £2 16s. It v/as explained that the costs w r ere heavy as one witness had to attend from Waiuku.
